BOULDER - University of Colorado redshirt freshman Brian Owens won the javelin throw at the CU Invitational with the seventh best throw in Buffalo history on Friday afternoon.

Owens had a breakout performance in just his second meet as a Buff with a toss of 221 feet (221-00), which he recorded on his fifth attempt of the day. The throw was over 26 feet further than any other thrower would get on the afternoon. Jonathan Vazquez took second overall with a mark of 194-02.

"I don't think that words can describe what I'm feeling right now," Owens said. "I expected to come out here and throw a good number, but this feels really good. Hopefully I can keep building on this every week."

Owens was already in first place after his first throw of the day and his second throw of 198-03 would have won the meet, but he just kept improving every time he took his turn on the runway. Owens became the first Buffalo this season to throw over 200 feet, doing so on his third attempt (204-00). His fourth try was even farther at 207-03. Owens ended the meet on a toss of 203-06.

The mark puts Owens fourth on the CU all-time performer's list and is just 13 inches from teammate Brandin Williams' top throw of 222-01, which Williams threw on May 17, 2009 to win the Big 12 Championship.  At the moment, the throw ranks 26th in the NCAA and is the fifth best in the Big 12.

"I couldn't be more happy for an individual," assistant coach Casey Malone said. "Brian has been working hard for a long time. He is recovering from an elbow injury and surgery and this is just his second meet. He has improved incredibly from his first meet three weeks ago. It really speaks to his work ethic, positive outlook, his belief in what we are doing and I think a big part also had to do with his family being out here. It was very special."

A couple of other Buffs recorded third-place finishes on Friday. Kevin Fasing placed third in the javelin with a season-best throw of 183-00. He earned that mark on his second throw of the day. Trey Mullen recorded a personal best in the men's hammer throw and took third overall. He launched a toss of 172-04, which also came on his second attempt.

"Trey keeps getting PRs this season, so it's fun to see him progress this year," Malone said. "He's just scratching the surface and I think he will have a big jump like Brian did if he can make those technical gains in his turns."

The Buffs had a pair of top-10 finishes in the women's hammer throw. Kellie Lind and Kirsten Wicks placed ninth and 10th, respectively. Lind earned a mark of 146-11 and Wick's had a throw of 136-05; both were personal bests. Holly Odneal led the CU women in the javelin. She recorded a throw of 101-08 for eighth place. CU volunteer assistant coach Emily Pearson won the javelin with a toss of 136-04 and assistant coach Lindsey Malone took second (126-05).

The CU Invitational will continue on Saturday at Potts Field. Running, jumping and throwing events all start at 11 a.m. Click here for a complete updated schedule. Admission and parking are free. Runnerspace.com will also post coverage of the track events on their website after each race.
