School board bans high jump - Sarnia Observer

School board bans high jump

By Barbara Simpson, Sarnia Observer

Elementary students at the Lambton Kent District School Board won't be reaching new heights in a popular track and field event.

The board has banned high jump from elementary gym classes and track and field meets. High school students also aren’t allowed to practice high jump at gym classes, but can compete in it at track and field meets.

Jim Costello, the board's director of education, said the move was made in part because of the recent death of a 17-year-old Smiths Falls, Ont. high jumper. The Grade 12 student died from injuries after missing the mat during a practice session. Ontario's coroner is expected to investigate the death.

“We also had some concerns expressed by our elementary principals and so thought we'd take a quick precautionary measure and stop high jump until we get a chance to look at the (Ontario Physical and Health Association) guidelines,” Costello said.
