Bell connects on big stage

Last Updated: June 3, 2012 10:26pm

WINDSOR - For a guy who has never made it to the OFSAA track and field championships, Riley Bell is making up a lot of ground. Usually around seven or 14 metres at a time, depending on the event.

The 17-year-old Grade 12 student at Central Elgin turned in an excellent performance Saturday on Day 2 of the West Regional meet at the University of Windsor, first winning the senior boys' triple jump with a leap of 14.06 metres, then taking the long jump with a personal best of 7.02.

In both cases, he was really pushed for the first time this season. In the triple jump, Braden Cok of Waterloo Macdonald went 14.03 on his third attempt, relegating Bell to second place until his final try. In the long jump, he outduelled 2011 OFSAA senior silver medallist and 2010 junior champion Mitch O'Donnell of Kitchener Forest Heights, getting better with each of his final three attempts to crack the seven-metre barrier for the first time.
