Four Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association athletes and one relay team qualified for event finals on the opening day of the OFSAA track and field championships in Sudbury.

Sydenham's Nicole Armstrong led the way, finishing third in heats in the midget girls 400 metres. Golden Eagles teammate Lacey Tryon is going to the open girls 1,500 metre steeplechase final after coming sixth in heats.

Brianna Bradley of Frontenac (11th in heats) is through to the junior girls 1,500 metre final, while La Salle's Rebecca Jaros is moving on in the senior girls 1,500.

Meanwhile, the Sydenham 400-metre junior girls relay team of Rachel Nelles, Kayla Gibson, Hannah Van Luven and Emelyn Fauvel finished sixth in heats to advance.

In field events, Jake Gurnsey of Holy Cross placed 21st in the midget boys triple jump, Philippe Fauvel of Sydenham was 19th in junior boys long jump and Anthony Broeders of Regiopolis-Notre Dame finished 15th in senior boys high jump.
