Weather interferes with record chasersBy STEVE GREEN, THE LONDON FREE PRESSLast Updated: May 30, 2011 8:10am
If there’s been one constant to the high school track and field season around here, it’s been the lousy weather.
And while the rain stayed away Saturday on Day 2 of the OFSAA West Regional championships at TD Waterhouse Stadium, an ever-strengthening wind from the south made sure record-breaking efforts would be kept to a minimum.
The senior boys’ long jump, for example, looked primed to be an outstanding competition. Cole Pellett of Madill and Mitch O’Donnell of Kitchener Cameron Heights shared the top seed at 7.00 metres, but only O’Donnell came close to even matching that, winning with 6.89.
“I’m too skinny for this wind,” said O’Donnell, who won the OFSAA junior triple jump and long jump titles in record fashion at the same stadium last year.
