St. Benedict’s Westney sets regional record

LONDON — Jellisa Westney squealed in delight when she realized what she had achieved.

“Oh my God,” exclaimed the St. Benedict student. “I can’t believe it.”

Westney had won the senior girls 100-metre dash a good 20 minutes earlier but had no idea she had set an OFSAA West record in the process. It wasn’t until a reporter told her the official order of finish that she showed what the record meant to her. Her time of 11.89 seconds bettered the old mark of 12.08, set way back in 2004.

The outgoing Westney, who has a scholarship offer from Michigan State University on the table, gave some of the credit to the fast Mondo running surface at TD Waterhouse Stadium.

“There is no comparison to what we run on. This is such good quality and the track at Rez is not exactly top of the line,” she said.
