St. Mary’s student wins gold at provincials
Jaimie Phelan shows the personal and team medals that she won at an OFSAA cross-country championship in Ottawa.
KITCHENER — Jaimie Phelan never expects to cross the finish line in first place.
It just seems to work out that way.
The St. Mary’s student added to her substantial medal collection over the weekend by striking gold at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations cross-country championship in Ottawa. The Grade 11 sensation won the senior girls 5.2-kilometre race in a time of 18 minutes, 52.2 seconds to beat Rachel Faulds of Trenton by nine seconds in a field of 245 runners.
It is the third straight year that Phelan has earned an OFSAA cross-country medal, having won gold in 2009 and silver in 2010 when she competed with a painful knee injury she suffered playing hockey.
