This morning, the UBC community celebrated the UBC athletes, coaches, and support staff heading to the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Attendees of the special send-off event included the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia, Stephen Toope, newly appointed Vice President, Communications and Community Partnership, Pascal Spothelfer, and UBC Director of Athletics and Recreation, Bob Philip.

The track and field team is thrilled that three athletes have virtually secured nominations to the Olympic team, needing only top-three performances at the Canadian Olympic Trials next week in Calgary – LIZ GLEADLE (javelin), INAKI GOMEZ (20km RW), and MIKE MASON (high jump).

As well, CURTIS MOSS is close to going for the javelin throw, needing an 'A' standard mark of 82.00 metres and a top-three finish at Trials, having thrown the 'B' standard already this season.

The UBC track and field program has sent 36 athletes, coaches, and staff, to past Olympics, and could raise the count to 39 at London, with Mason having competed in Beijing in 2008.

We are extremely proud of what our athletes have accomplished, and wish them all the best in London.

Whether we are in London in person, or in front of our TVs and computers, we'll be cheering and supporting them the whole way.
