With clear skies and double-digit temperatures in the weekend forecast, the 2012 UBC Open is shaping up to be the best in its short history. The meet will bring together top athletes from UBC, SFU, Edmonton Thunder Track & Field Club, and many of the best high school athletes from around the Lower Mainland.

The meet takes place this Saturday at the Rashpal Dhillon UBC Track & Field Oval, on the corner of 16th Ave and Wesbrook Mall on the UBC campus. Events kick-off at 1:45 pm with the 4x100 relay and will span into the afternoon with the last event at 4:20 pm.

Point Grey TFC's Nigel Hole is entered in the men's 800 m, and will rabbit the 1,500 m also. A 2011 NAIA All-American in the 1,500 m, Hole is starting his outdoor season at the UBC Open, then plans on going to California for the Mt. SAC Relays, and the Brutus Hamilton and Payton Jordan Invitationals later this month.

Asked what he was hoping for at the meet, Hole texted back, "Sub 2".

LEGACY

The Rashpal Dhillon UBC Track & Field Oval at Thunderbird Park, which opened in 2009, serves as a community legacy, particularly for the UBC Track & Field team. The state-of-the-art facility allows the Thunderbirds to host meets like the UBC Open – providing good competition at home without having to incur the expenses of travelling to meets. This year the meet has attracted over 200 entrants, a record for the UBC Open and will set the stage for highly competitive races.
