GuelphMercury - Guelph international track dream close, say planners

Running insiders in Guelph believe they are very close to fulfilling the dream of building an international caliber track and field facility at the University of Guelph. They just need to raise several hundred thousand dollars in the next few days.

Last week, U of G landed an athletic windfall when an anonymous donor cut a cheque for $1.5 million to help rejuvenate Alumni Stadium, which was in disrepair. Those funds will help the university install artificial turf in the stadium, but not an eight-lane track and accompanying field event facilities. Enter the Guelph Track Project.

The project, part of the local Canadian Centre for Running Excellence, has been rallying the Guelph community around the idea of building a track facility that could host international events.

Such a facility is no small amenity. If built, it would attract international events that would boost economic activity in the community, and boost the performance levels of local athletes, John Marsden, director of Canadian Centre for Running Excellence said.

Now the push is on to make the track dream come true in time for the spring construction season, with a mind to have it ready by the fall track season. A feverish fundraising push is now underway to garner $500,000 worth of commitments in the next few days and $1 million within a month. Track coach Dave Scott-Thomas is confident it can be and will be done.
