Guelph Track Project Chasing One Million Dollar Target

Published by
Chris Moulton   on Jan 26 2012, 08:10 PM

The Guelph Track Project is off and running, with a full on campaign.  The ambitious campaign will see the community raise one million dollars to help build a high performance track facility at the University of Guelph Alumni Stadium.  The campaign builds on a donation the University received last week of 1.5 million dollars for a new football field at the stadium.

"You've got to feel proud of being a part of this project! We're getting support from across the country and many walks of life." Gryphon Head Coach Dave Scott-Thomas said of the project.  "This isn't just about 400m of rubber, it's about a giant team coming together and showing the power of active living and community."

The Project needs to raise a substantial amount of the funds by the end of January.  Although the timelines are short organizers are confident the deadline can be met with community support.  Corporate sponsors are being engaged with Speed River Physiotherapy being the first announced lane sponsor.  Lane sponsorship are available for $50,000, there are a variety of other donation opportunities available.  Donations from $20 to $50,000 have been received.

"We have worked for years to get to the point where this project could be a reality.  Now we have 7 days to find the funds. This is a community that understands and supports running and I believe that we will put it all together. It is going to be an exciting weekend." Project organizer John Marsdent commented.

There is also a four group challenge being held between the current varsity team, a group of alumni led by Dave Scott-Thomas, another alumni group led by Reid Coolsaet and the local triathlon community.
