Just as with the coaches poll in football the cross country coaches don't pay attention to teams and base their ranking on the previous year's performances with the expectation that undergraduate athletes will return the next year. In the case of cross country the coaches miss athletes not returning at the beginning of the year and overreact to early season performances. No one expected Wisconsin or Portland to be as good as the poll would indicate. Wisconsin will be a much better team at the end of the year.
