Spectacular meet comes to close in Colorado

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Some said this was the best Colorado state track and field meet of all-time. All the four-event winners, the records smashed into oblivion, maybe they had a point.

But then again, they probably say that every year.

Here are the best performances from the three-day state track and field meet in Colorado.

Fountain-Fort Carson and Palmer Ridge repeat

No surprises here.

Fountain-Fort Carson had so many of the top sprinters in the state, Palmer Ridge had so much depth across the board, titles seemed inevitable for the Class 5A and 4A back-to-back championson Saturday.

Trojans senior Tevin Donnell did most of the damage for his team.

Saturday, he started off by beating junior teammate Christian Lyon by .09 seconds in the 5A 100 at 10.88. And later, he took the 200 in 21.81 and was the third leg in the 400 relay, which won in 41.69.

Friday, he was the third leg of the winning 800 relay.

“It feels amazing,” said Donnell, who will run for Colorado State-Pueblo next year. “I can’t really put it into words. To get this, like this, it feels great.”

Uber-fast junior Caleb Ojennes and senior Eric Hamer fueled the Bears’ win in 4A.

Ojennes won the 400 in 47.35 and the 200 in 21.75. He anchored the 1,600 relay to a win in 3:18.56.

Hamer, a Colorado State commit, led the 3,200 every step of the way and won in 9:22.30. He also anchored the 3,200 relay to a win in 7:57.44.

Neither were worried about times, just wins.

“Some guys come into state and try to Superman it, and try to run well over what they've ever done,” Hamer said. “I knew I had to save some of my energy. I have four events. Winning by 30 seconds doesn’t give you extra team points. So it wasn’t what we needed.”

Meanwhile, Shayna Yon won the 100 and 200 -in the absence of an injured 10-time state track champion Ally Watt- to lead Cherokee Trail to a Class 5A girls’ title. Paul Roberts won the 3,200 and 1,600 to lead Lyons to another 2A title.

Kansas commit went a perfect 4 for 4

Widefield’s Jordan Edmonds was about to win the Class 4A 100-meter run.

At least, that’s what she thought.

The Gladiators led the field, only a few meters left until her first state title, when she was blinded by a flash of red.

“I just see this red hair go by me in the last five steps,” the Wyoming commit said.

It was Lewis-Palmer’s Nicole Montgomery, the red-headed queen of Class 4A sprints.

The Rangers senior won four events and completed the rare sprint trifecta at the state meet.

Saturday, she won the 400 in a 4A state record time of 52.95 seconds, and sandwiched it with tight wins in the 100 (12.16) and 200 (24.14).

Friday, she anchored the team’s sprint medley to a win and 4A record in 1:45.06.

“The goal really wasn’t to win four state titles. That’s just crazy,” she said. “I was focused on the 800 sprint medley yesterday and hitting 52 in the 400. I mean, the other two are just awesome.”

Montgomery leaves high school with eight state titles in track and two in volleyball.

She’ll go to the University of Kansas on a track scholarship.

“Nicole was a four-year starter on some great volleyball teams,” her father, Tony said when asked about Nicole’s decision to run track over play volleyball in college. “Over the summer we did the college circuit and she realized her ceiling was higher in track.”

The state 800 record was broken, and then it was broken again

Cheyenne Mountain’s William Mayhew broke the Colorado high school record when he ran a 1:50.74 in the Class 4A race.

That held up for about 20 minutes on Friday.

Smoky Hill’s Blake Yount took back the record he’d previously owned when he ran a 1:50.59 in the Class 5A race.

“The thing I always focus on is the time,” Yount said. “I’m not worried about the guy next to me. I’m worried about the time. It’s the universal measurement for everyone no matter the class.”

Cherry Creek’s Jordyn Colter breaks two records

There wasn’t much question whether the Bruins senior would win the the Class 5A 800 and 1,600 at the state meet. She’s a top runner in the nation, and she owns this stage.

But who expected this?

Colter broke the state record in the 800 with a time of 2 minutes and 4.56 seconds on Friday. Then, she eclipsed former Niwot and current Stanford runner Elise Cranny’s record in the 1,600 with a time of 4:46.22 on Saturday.

She didn’t believe it at first.

“I was like, ‘Are you sure that’s right,’” she said after her 1,600. “I guess it still hasn’t set in yet.”

Katie Rainsberger dominates 4A distance events

Air Academy’s Katie Rainsberger committed a rare runner’s faux pas on the first day of state track.

With a late lead for in the 3,200 on Thursday, memories of Cranny stealing the state title in the last few meters began to flood her mind. She looked behind her on the final straightaway.

“I peeked behind me,” Rainsberger said. “It’s probably not great, and who knows, it might be my hamartia … Visions of Elise Cranny, I guess.”

This time Rainsberger looked and happily saw no one.

The Kadets junior won the 3,200 in 10 minutes and 49.47 seconds. She went on to anchor the 3,200 relay in 9:25.38 later that day. She then won the 800 on Friday followed by the 1,600 in 4 minutes and 52.38 seconds on Saturday.

None of them were particularly close.

“Coming out here and racing hard felt really good,” Rainsberger said. “I wasn’t really worried about the times – it’s at altitude and I didn’t really have someone there. I’m just excited to have the meet win overall.”

Rainsberger said she was currently looking at Stanford, Michigan, Harvard and Georgetown to run at in college.
