Western State College of Colorado - Mountaineers Strong in Time Trials

GUNNISON, Colo. - Seven men finished today's 7.1-kilometer course together with 36 minutes and 38 seconds while Lauren Kleppin, Tara Richadson and Sarah Lyle led the women with 27:38 as the Western State cross country teams started the season this morning with the annual Time Trials. Tyler Rasmussen, Tyler Pennel, Ryan Haebe, Mike Schmidt, Garrett Wilson, Gabe Proctor and Sean Brown all ran in the lead pack and the group recorded a 1:06 lap twice on the 1,783-meter circuit. Eleven runners ran the full six laps for 7,138 meters. Adam Sinda, Luke Verbus, Henry Gaudison, Ian Butler and David Flynn turned in the fastest lap of the morning with an even six-minute lap on the final of their four-lap run. Collin Munoz and Cody Banks were the only runners to do a five-lap run, with Munoz winning among the two with 32:15. Kleppin, Richardson and Lyle each turned in the fastest lap for the women on their final lap with 6:43. Julianne Payton ran with the lead group for the first two laps but fell off on the final two and finished fourth for the women with 28:05. Anna Marshall led a group of five women who ran only three of the four laps and paced the group with 20:59. The Mountaineers will officially open the 2010 season in two weeks when the teams travel to the Colorado State Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo. The men will start the season as the second-ranked team in Division II, while the women will travel as the No. 9 team in the nation.
