Keturah Orji taking first triple jump attempts of 2014Published by
Will the TJ record fall Wednesday, or later?
By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Because it's Keturah Orji, and she's entered in the triple jump on Wednesday at the New Jersey Metropolitan Invitational, there is instant record potential. But also, because it's the Mount Olive senior's first triple jump competition of the season, it may not be realistic just yet. Orji's coach confirmed on Monday that the plan for Wednesday is an abbreviated 12-step approach and an emphasis on mastering technique. On a 10-step approach at a recent clinic in Florida, Orji spanned a best of 41-6 on two attempts. The national indoor record of 44-6.75 by Ke'Niya Richardson CA in 2007 is by no means easy. But Orji, outdoors in 2013, hit a best of 44-11. So the record is within her grasp. "It's possible for her to save her full approach for finals (on Wednesday), but it all depends on how she feels, the competition, and how the meet is going," advised Mount Olive coach Sirajj Ziyad. "As for what I think she could jump on a full approach, I feel that Keturah has the capability to make anything happen."
On Wednesday, we'll find out.
