DeBalsi vs. Schwartz headlines FL NE

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Hannah DeBalsi and Brianna Schwartz, a pair of Foot Locker contenders and returners from last year's meet in San Diego, will go head to head on Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park.

It should be a great race between the Connecticut and Pennsylvania champions, but the potential for six returning Foot Locker finalists in this race has evaporated and left the door open for others to snag a big opporunity.

After 2013 Northeast and national champion Tessa Barrett last year, the second-through-seventh place finishers in the meet were non-seniors.

Anoush Shehadeh, of Phillips Andover, a surprising fourth at the national championships last year, is running at NXN Northeast with her teammates. And so is Jessica Lawson of Corning, who was seventh at FL Northeast a year ago.

Briana Gess, the top talent in New Jersey, is sittting the meet out while she recovers from an illness. Megan Reilly of Warwick NY left her team in September to focus on getting healthy for track season.

Among the top candidates to step up and grab a berth to San Diego are: Gabrielle Richici CT, Ariel Keklak MA, Erin Dietz MA, Eve Glasergreen NJ, Ephiphany Grisbaum NJ, Marissa Sheva PA, Mady Clahane PA, Madeleine Davison PA and Emma McMillan RI.

Up front, DeBalsi and Schwartz can either relax and coast to a qualifying berth, or duke it out and compete like crazy as a tune-up for the national championship. Both of them delayed the start of their seasons just to get ramped up for this time of year.

Boys Breakdown

Alex Ostberg of Darien CT was third at this meet a year ago and is now an overwhelming favorite to win the the regional title. He has been outstanding this seaon on the way to victories at Manhattan, the CT class and open meets, and New Englands.

Ostberg was the only non-senior in the top 10 of last year's meet, which means the Northeast will send nine new faces to nationals.

Among those eager to make it is Colin Abert from Easton PA, who enjoyed a record-breaking fall up until his state championship, where he fell a bit flat. Abert was 13th at Foot Locker NE last year.

And junior Edwin Rutto from St. Benedict's Prep has been targeting this meet all along as well. He was 30th a year ago but should be in the mix for a top-10 spot this time.

Other top candidates include Mikey Brannigan, last year's NXN NY winner, Ari Klau CT, Evan Woods MD, Quinn Cooney MA, Nick Carleo MA and Jake Brophy PA.
