Arcadia Invitational Highlights

Saturday:

* US#1 for Stamatia Scarvelis of Dos Pueblos CA with 172-7 in the discus. She also threw 52-1 to win the shot put and sweep both events against formidable Ashlie Blake NV.

* US#1 for Vashti Cunningham of Bishop Gorman NV with her clearance of 6-2 in the high jump. She had a good attempt at 6-3, which would have been a sophomore class record. As it is, she is just a quarter inch behind Gabrielle Williams (a 2012 Olympic Trials competitor) on the all-time Nevada list.

* US#1 for Paul Lucas of Arizona in the 200, where he ran 20.84 seconds.

* In a much-anticipated girls 3200 there was a no-show (Sarah Baxter) and Alexa Efraimson's bid for a HSR fell apart on her fifth (76), sixth (79) and seventh (77) laps. Still, her 9:55.92 is No. 5 all-time. And Allie Ostrander stepped up big for second place and a new Alaska record with 10:03.66. Bethan Knights and Anna Maxwell both broke 10:05.

* In the boys race, a record 19 boys slipped under nine minutes. And if you counted Estevan De La Rosa of Arcadia running 8:56 in the seeded race, the total was 20. As expected Blake Haney of Stockdale was the class of the field, tearing away late to win in 8:46.80. The surprise came from Andrew Rafla of Idaho, breaking his state record with 8:50.55 and getting second ahead of Cerake Geberkidane CO.

* Ricky Faure of Rock Springs WY ran 4:09.32 to win the mile in an all-time state best for Wyoming. (Later, Jonah Henry of Laramie ran an all-time state best for 3200 with 9:03 in the seeded race).

* Lucy Biles of Herriman UT held off a late challenge from Danielle Jones AZ to win the girls invitational mile in 4:50.68.

* Redondo Union got a 4:12 anchor leg to win an entertaining boys DMR as four teams finished within a third of a second. Redondo was timed in 10:09.63, followed by Central Catholic OR in 10:09.82, Centennial NV in 10:09.94 and Palos Verdes CA in 10:09.98.

* The Buchanan CA girls were decisive winners in the invitational DMR with 11:58.53.

* Curtis Godin of Mater Dei CA ran 10.36 to win the 100 meters and defeat Lucas and Isaiah Brandt-Sims WA.

* Arianna Washington of Long Beach Poly CA ran 11.38 (2.1 wind) to handily win the girls invitational 100.

Friday:

* Harrison Williams of Memphis U TN posted the highest high school decathlon total by someone not named Curtis Beach or Gunnar Nixon on Friday, piling up 7525 points. Timothy Duckworth of AZ was second with 7122. Williams is a Stanford recruit.

* Ashlee Moore of Hamilton AZ won the heptathlon with 5048 points. The Univeristy of Oregon recruit was followed by Tiana Bonds of Centennial NV (4999), an Arizona recruit, Shaina Burns of Lakeville South MN (4908), who is headed to Texas A&M, and Maya Neal of Neuqua Valley IL (4904), a junior.

* 4x800: The girls from Clovis North CA was the overall winner in 9:06.90, good for US#2. Rocky Mountain ID won the boys invitational in US#1 7:44.92.

* 4x200: Parkland NC won the girls championship in US#6 1:37.82. Union Catholic NJ took the boys race in 1:27.18.

* Sprint Med: Garden Serra CA's boys (1:31.14) and Long Beach Poly's girls (1:45.6) won the 800-meter medley. Then McQueen NV ran US#1 3:26.56 in the 1600 medley (4-2-2-8) and then Centennial NV ran US#2 3:59.66 to win the girls invitational.

* Shuttle Hurdles: The performance of the night came from the Vacaville CA girls, who broke the national record in the 4x100 hurdles with 57.17. It was an 11-year-old record held by Riverside North (57.49). Brophy Prep AZ beat Union Catholic NJ in a very good matchup on the boys side, 1:00.43 to 1:00.70.

* Rated Sections of 3200: Luke Sheesley of Fort Collins CO saved some speed for the end to get past Lucky Schreiner of Campo Verde CA and got the win in a very respectable 9:07.99. Schreiner was next in 9:08.10. Emily Hamlin of Boise got a big PR to win the girls rated race in 10:38.25.

* 4x1600: Great Oak CA flexed its distance muscle with impressive victories in the boys and girls invitational races. Great Oak's girls got away from Saugus with a nice third leg by Destiny Collins and then Haley Dorris brough it home in 20:12.79. In the boys race, anchor Nick Doan withstood a challenge from Central Catholic of Oregon and its senior veteran Kyle Thompson but held on to take it in 17:21.11 to CC's 17:22.43. It was 4:15 for Doan, 4:16 for Thompson on those anchor carries.

Arcadia and Even Penn this year are a bit too early for the eastern teams to be near their best..Spring just arrived last week and running in the hall does not allow for working on skills like the 110 hurdles or training for sprint relays. It is too bad that more Texas and Florida high schools do not come north to face the Jamaicans, who are only two weeks past Champs prime. UC ran. 1:27 4 by 200 against good competition. Seems like a score of Texas teams have posted 1:25s...who would win in late May or June...UC or the Texans.? it would be closer than the two second gap.

Agreed on all points. Texas and Florida already starting their state meet series.

That's not the first time that Alexa has gone out hard and alone but probably the first 3200/2 mile where she did that. She looked a little tired on the 7th lap but looked great on the 8th when she put it all together. When I asked her after the race if she was concerned during that 7th lap she just giggled. No idea how to interpret that! If there's no oMary Cain this kid is all anyone would be talking about. She super and has yet another year to go after this one.

Baxter is injured.

UC had two injuries, not serious but not enough to risk it. If you noticed, Animashaun was only 5th in the 110H in 14.47. He's clearly faster than that when 100%.

UC ran 3:14.00 in the trials and 3:16.06 in the finals at Penn last year. We'll see if they are ready to do that again this year and where it puts them.

She took it out hard in her last 3200m as well (Tiger Invite), well at least comparatively speaking... (remember, this being her third event that day) opened in a 71.6 and ran very similar distribution of splits to Arcadia. They were actually what I used (as %'s since she'd be fresh) when I posted on Letsrun some hypothetical splits:

Tiger Invite: 71.6-76.3-77.9-79.1-78.9-79.7-73.5 (10:16.2)
Projected Arcadia: 70-74-76-76-77-77-77-71 (9:58)
Actual Arcadia: 67.6-75.6-74.8-76.3-76.8-79.2-77.7-67.9 (9:55.92)

Can never predict these things, but letting Efraimson go it alone was a good learning experience for her... Overall, Arcadia also showed that some runners from the colder climes in the West are very . Hope the kid from Alaska, Ostrander., gets more races in the lower 48. What is the back story on Baxter? Also why did Union Catholic pull out of the 4x400?
HopeLB Poly girls get it together in time to challenge the Jamaicans at Penn. They still have the best anchor runner.. Do not see any of the U.S. teams who are ready for the island guys. Too early in the season for the northeast teams, even Union Catholic.

They were saying on the Letsrun board that there was a rumor last night that Baxter wasn't 100% and was going to scratch.... I guess they weren't trolling for once?

She scratched last night.

In the boys 3200 meters tonight ... new all-time state bests for:

Idaho ... Andrew Rafla (8:50.55)
Wyoming ... Jonah Henry 9:03.26 for second in the seeded race. (This one is murkier but we think it's a record).

Those are the only ones tonight but kind of a surprising that Rafla got up for second. Great run by him, beating a Dallin Farnsworth record by almost five seconds. And beating Armstrong by about five seconds.

Montana ... Makena Morley (10:16.38)

crazy anchor by Redondo! Awesome!!

4 teams under 10:10, but none under 10:09. Great race!
watchout
looks like the DMR is going to be between Central Catholic and Dana Hills? That'll be a good anchor showdown!
watchout
Boys DMR up... some pretty strong teams.

How many break into the Arcadia Top-10 (current #10 is Madera South's 10:09.42 from last year)

Excellent race.

No Florida guys.

Loaded field (as always) in the Boys 3200m...

  • 8:42.30 Thom Hunt Patrick Henry CA 1976
  • 8:43.24 Chris Solinsky Stevens Point WI 2003
  • 8:44.48 Eric Hulst Laguna Beach CA 1976

Alexa went out a little bit too fast ... same as when she was at New Balance Indoors.

9:55.92 for a meet record but it's a learning experience for her.

It's not easy to run that fast that far by yourself.
DougB
Wow.... that pack broke apart fast!

Interesting that Estevan De La Rosa is in the seeded race ... and way out in front.

Why isn't he in the fast race?

A little too aggressive at the start, maybe... fell off pace a bit on laps 6/7. Still a strong performance at 8:56.55, but he was a guy that should have been sub-8:50 (I would think). He makes three runners under 9:00 in the SEEDED sections in the last two years (Adam Peterman and John Lawson both ran under 8:59 last year)
DougB
Solo 8:56.55 for De La Rosa. 63 flat on the final 400.

Estevan De La Rosa not messing around in this ridiculously loaded Seeded 3200m ... opening lap of 61!! and going through 800 in 2:08?
