Orji looks to improve upon US#1 marks

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Perhaps tonight is the night that the national triple jump record goes down.

The Eastern States meet -- once a very big deal from Virginia up through the Northeast -- returns to The Armory with national leaders in five events serving as headliners.

But this could be Keturah Orji's record-setting moment. After competing in her New Jersey groups meet last week -- where horizontal jumps are not contested -- the senior from Mount Olive NJ has a chance to go for the national record. (It's 44-6.75 and Orji has already gone 44-0 this season in her first attempt using a full approach).

With the New York championships later this weekend many of the state's top athletes are skipping this meet. However, US#1 shot putter Benjamin Bronhurst is on the list, US#4 pole vaulter Todd Uckermark is entered. Chaminade is listed in a couple of relays. And there are some other notables.

Most of New Jersey's big guns are in it. In addition to Orji (also US#1 in the long jump), Olivia Baker and her Columbia Maplewood relay teammates are in, Union Catholic and Christian Brothers are in, and Zyaire Clemes of Trenton Central could soar upward from his US#19 spot in the 400.

Also, Maddy Berkson of Classical RI is coming back to The Armory again and is entered in the 800 and mile. She could get some competition in the 800 from PSAL champion Yazmin Wilsonjones of Port Richmond (Staten Island), who ran 1:32.75 for a US#3 in the 600 on Saturday.
