Susan Wagner Looks to Build Momentum at Manhattan Invite

The boys of Susan Wagner left Van Cortlandt Park disappointed this past Sunday after not hearing their team announced as one of the top three NYC Mayor’s Cup finishers.

With a squad featuring three of the 10 fastest PSAL cross country (5k) runners from last season, the Wagner boys found it hard to believe that they had finished sixth behind Brooklyn Tech, Midwood, Regis, Trinity and Stuyvesant, respectively.

But that’s all in the past now says team captain, Emmanuel Morales.

“A lot of us finished way off of our personal bests,” said Morales, who suffered an untimely side stitch halfway through that race. “But we’re still confident that we’ll finish the rest of the season strongly. We just have to continue to stay focused so we can keep progressing and stay healthy.”

Morales and the rest of his team are eager to step their performances up. Their next chance at doing so will be at the Manhattan College High School Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, October 10.

Like the NYC Mayor’s Cup, the Manhattan Invitational varsity races will be ran over a 2.5 mile course at Van Cortlandt Park. The annual meet will feature thousands of athletes from states across the country.

Susan Wagner will compete in the Varsity Section B race at 12:58 p.m. Stuyvesant may be the only other PSAL team in Section B, but Susan Wagner will be running to prove that they belong at the top of the PSAL ranks. They believe a solid performance this Saturday will give them the momentum they need to reach their goals of winning the varsity team title at the PSAL City Championships on Sunday, November 8 and performing well at the New York Federation Championships on November 21.

The Manhattan Invitational will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. The boys varsity letter races run from 12:46 p.m. to 1:58 p.m., directly followed by the boys Eastern States Championships. The girls Eastern States Championship race starts at 2:57 p.m. and is directly followed by the girls varsity letter races.
