Sally Kipyego takes the world lead in the women's 1,500 at the Oregon Relays

EUGENE - Running alone for the last half of the race, and slicing through a stiff breeze on the back straight, Sally Kipyego ran a world-leading time in the 1,500 meters Friday night at Hayward Field.

Kipyego, who runs for Oregon Track Club Elite/Eugene, finished in 4 minutes 6.23 seconds, a personal record and .27 faster than the previous world best run by Jamaica's Kenia Sinclair.

It was the highlight performance of the first day of the Oregon Relays, contested before an announced crowd of 6,754 on a sunny afternoon that turned chilly late.
