Adams State’s High Altitude Training Center welcomes first crop of students in summer ‘12
30-time coach of the Year Martin leads one-of-a-kind project

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State University’s High Altitude Training Center, a one-of-a-kind opportunity providing college students the opportunity to both study and experience the benefits of training at 7,544 feet above sea level, opened its doors to its first crop of scholars in June of 2012 for the first of two summer sessions.

The center’s opening session began on June 4 and runs through June 27, before session  two gets underway from July 2 thru July 26.

The courses are led by Adams State Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Damon Martin who has been named national coach of the year 30 times, including receiving U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) 2012 Men’s Division II Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year honors this spring. Legendary coach Dr. Joe I. Vigil will also be a guest speaker at both camps during the summer of 2012.

The High Altitude Training Center will provide a Human Performance and Physical Education (HPPE) class through Adams State University, focusing on the physiological benefits and a “how to” of training at altitude. In addition to coursework, students will gain practical experience and be able to apply their studies while living on campus in Alamosa at 7,544 feet above sea level.

Adams State’s full athletics facilities will be made available to all students participating in the High Altitude Training Center, including a state-of-the-art weight room, athletic training room, Olympic-sized swimming pool, indoor and outdoor track, as well as Alter-G and Woodway treadmills.

Alamosa and Adams State have long been renowned for their endurance training benefits, and hosted the first ever Olympic Marathon Trials in 1968. ASU’s Plachy Hall also served as the training center for the U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team as they trained for the 1968 games in Mexico City.
