Joe Newton HUNTLEY, ILL. > Cross-country Newton, 81, who holds the record for coaching the most state-title-winning teams in boys' cross-country, won his 27th 3A title at York Community High. His teams have finished in the top three at state 43 times in 51 years. In 1988, he was the first high school coach named to the staff of a U.S. men's Olympic track and field team. Jim Tracy SAN FRANCISCO > Cross-country Tracy, 60, who was diagnosed with ALS in June, coached the San Francisco University High Red Devils to a record eighth state title in girls' cross-country. Team captain Holland Reynolds, exhausted but determined to finish the meet for her ailing coach, crawled across the finish line in 37th place to clinch the team title.
