3 big transfers bolster Cardozo track team

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Coach Ray James' recent run of success training some of the top young women in the New York City area to achieve college scholarships has produced an unexpected windfall of transfers over the summer to Benjamin Cardozo of Queens.

Emma Gallagher, US#4 in the 400 hurdles last spring for Garden City; D'Jai Baker, US#26 in the 400 meters (54.21) for North Babylon; and Marie-Jose Ebwea Bile, a French national who place fifth in the triple jump at the 2013 World Youth Championships, are all now part of James' training group.

James said that while he's heard accusations that he had recruited the athletes, it isn't true.

"I think parents are just attracted when they hear the names of the colleges (of recent Cardozo graduates)," James said.

In the past three years, James has worked with distance runners Alexis Panisse (Tennessee), Sabrina Southerland (Georgetown) and Denise Branch (Illinois). In the past, he also worked with Dalilah Muhammad (USC) and Phyllis Francis (Oregon).

Gallagher, a senior, ran 2:10.80 as an eighth grader in the 800 meters. This past spring she ran 2:13.47, but has turned primary focus to the 400 hurdles, where she ran 58.87.

Baker is a junior and Ebwea Bile, who has trained in the summers in the U.S. the past several years, is enrolled in high school here for the first time. She's 17.

"She's a jumper but she doesn't run fast enough, so I've promised (her mother) we'll turn her into a sprinter," James said.

Those additions could help Cardozo instantly become one of the top 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams in the country.

Seriously? Leave Garden City H.S. for Cardozo? I know Cardozo is the best public school in NYC but to leave Garden City to go there for one year and wasn't recruited? I have a bridge to sell you if you believe that.
