Joe Marsh has coached a Heisman Trophy winner and an Olympian in 35 years at Southwest High School. The district named the high school's annual track meet the Joe Marsh Dragon Relays, the only event in the school district that's named after an employee. There have been about 10 head football coaches in the past 35 years, but just one track coach and drivers ed teacher. Back then, Marsh admits teaching drivers ed was a little more difficult while he wore platform shoes. Southwest's principal, Jo Ann Fey, was a drivers ed student and track star for Marsh who went on to compete in the shot put for SMU. Marsh was Southwest's wide receivers coach when Detmer was a quarterback for the Dragons. Because of Marsh, it's the only high school in the city that still has a drivers ed teacher.
