Princeton freshman and U.S. junior record holder Conor McCullough easily moved through to the final round at the IAAF World Junior Championships on Friday in Moncton, Canada. McCullough met the automatic qualifying mark on his first attempt with a throw of 76.05m (249-6). He was the second best qualifier overall behind world leader Ákos Hudi of Hungary. Two years ago, McCullough placed second at the meet as just a 17-year-old and this year he improved his best with the 6-kilogram implement to a U.S. record distance of 78.28m.

Also moving through to the final was Justin Welch of Eastwood High School in Pemberville, Ohio. Welch, the U.S. junior runner-up, had the 11th best qualifying mark with a throw of 67.46m (221-4) in the first round. He fouled his next attempt, but still threw far enough to place in the top twelve and earn a spot in Sunday's final. Complete results of the qualifying round are available here.
