Who I Am...

While I am considered an old fart, born in 1932, hell, I am an old fart. None the less, I fell in love with track and field back during the Roger Bannister days when he was the first to run under four minutes for the mile.  After that I witnessed Jim Bailey, Peter Snell, Bill Dellinger, Jim Grelle, Landy, Dyroll Burleson, Steve Prefontaine, and many many others tear up the track.

My first great track and field meet as a fan was at Hayward Field in 1962 where I watched the University of Oregon ducks under the guidance of Bill Bowerman man handle the nations best at the first NCAA championships ever held at Hayward. It was a cinder track then, I was standing on the first curve and Harry Jerome, and other great sprinters came by and actually threw cinders at us with their feet, they were moving so fast. I knew that race horses could do that, but never thought humans were that powerful.

On a personal note, I am married for thirty years to a wonderful woman who helped to raise our son and to get him on the road to good citizenship. He works in television and radio in the Portland Oregon area.  We loved to dance, although we are not able to dance that much anymore.  We have traveled quite a lot in our married life, been to Europe, the Carribean, Hawaii for vacations.

Love most sports, but nothing like track and field for me. I feel very fortunate to be from a state where track and field isn't an after thought. We live about 140 miles south of Eugene (track town USA) The best collegiate as well as national meets are held at Hayward field with the best fans and knowledgeable ones at that are always there to cheer their warriors across the finish line. Looking forward for more great things from Andrew Wheating in Europe, and am especially looking forward to the ducks cross country team and track teams this coming year. That includes the ladies too. Both should be great again now that A.J. Acosta has seemed to find his inner self with a 3:53 and change mile run at Prefontaine classic this year and his 3:30 plus 1500 meters in Europe.
