Update on Boys 4xMile Relay Mixup from Meet Director Jim Spier
Concerning the Boys 4xmile at the 2011 New Balance Outdoor Nationals and the miscounting of laps in the first section:
Our officials’ group is one of the best anywhere. Their collective service and experience numbers in the thousands of years. Occasionally mistakes are made. Though technically it is the runner’s responsibility to count laps, in this case the anchor leg was placed on the track at the direction of the officials after only three laps were run by leg #3. As a result, most of those teams ran one lap short of the full Four Mile Relay.
It is obvious that the race cannot be rerun. We will issue full sets of medals and All American certificates to the top six teams which ran the correct distance and to those who did not. We will also issue championship rings to the winners in both cases.
Please accept my apologies and know that we will do everything in our power to rectify this in the future.
