Kyle Boorsma’s stunning 3:39.20 performance in the men’s 1500 metres highlighted an outstanding showing for the Speed River Track and Field Club at the Harry Jerome International Track Classic in Vancouver on Friday night. Boorsma became the 17th fastest Canadian in history in the process and was a mere 1.2 seconds off the Olympic B standard. Teammate Taylor Milne finished 12th in a disappointing 3:45.86.

In the women’s 1500 metre event Hilary Stellingwerff posted a seasonal best time of 4 minutes 8.03 seconds to finish second after getting nabbed at the line by Malindi Elmore. Stellingwerff’s time betters the World Championships B standard, meaning she needs only to achieve the A standard of 4 minutes 5.90 seconds to qualify to represent Canada at the World Championships in Daegu this fall. Genevieve Lalonde set a personal best in the same race with her time of 4 minutes 18.58 seconds, with teammate Rachel Cliff right behind finishing in 4 minutes 20.64 seconds. In the women’s Olympic Development 800 metre race, Rachel Aubry won the section by nearly 2 seconds in a time of 2 minutes 6.65 seconds. Rounding out the action was Rob Jackson who set a personal best of 3 minutes 46.51 seconds for the 1500 metres in the Olympic Development section.

The River also had a strong showing at the Forest City 5k in London, Ontario on Thursday night. Leading the way with a whopping 23 second personal best was Andrea Seccafien in a time of 16 minutes 51.94 seconds. Teammates Lindsay Furtado and Carise Thompson finished in 17 minutes 16.09 seconds and 17 minutes 22.65 seconds respectively.

The Speed River steeplechasers saw good results in London as well, with Matt Brunsting finishing 2nd in the race with a time of 8 minutes 47.48 seconds. Chris Winter finished in 8 minutes 53.81 seconds, while Cody Murray posted a new personal best of 9 minutes 18.65 seconds. The steeplechase women were in action at the Harry Jerome pre-meet on Thursday night led by Dana Buchanan in a time of 10 minutes 9.18 seconds and Meredith MacGregor right behind in 10 minutes 12.79 seconds.
