Armstrong carries crowd at Toronto track meet

A crowd of a couple hundred gathered in the corner of a soccer field behind the University of Toronto’s Varsity Centre on Wednesday night to watch enormous men twist and whirl and grunt.

“Daaahhhhhhh,” yelled one, chucking his 16-pound shot 19 metres. It landed with a thud, and was followed by polite claps reminiscent of a golf course gallery.

“Deahhhyeahhhhh,” huffed another hefty heaver, hurling the shot just a little further than the last.
“Good toss, good toss,” said a member of the gallery.

They had gathered for the Toronto International Track and Field Games. The event was packed with track and field excellence, included the likes of Canadian hurdler Perdita Felicien and American sprinter Walter Dix.
