For many, putting the hammer down means their favorite NASCAR driver is making a move toward the front of the field.

Or, it means finishing a satisfying day of home improvement. Or spewing a few well-chosen words after smashing a thumb with a particular tool.

For Marcel Lomnicky, the hammer is a way to reach the 2012 Summer Olympics. And his hammer weighs considerably more than the hammer found in most tool boxes.

The Virginia Tech student-athlete is less than three meters (9.8 feet) from becoming a member of the Slovakian Olympic team and competing in the London Games in August.
