Olympic dream approaching reality
Mohammed Ahmed has taken a giant step towards representing Canada at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England.
Competing in the 10,000-metre event at the recent Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., the St. Catharines Collegiate alumnus placed sixth in a blistering time of 27:34:64. It was the sixth fastest time in the world this year, surpassed the Olympic standard by more than 10 seconds and beat the University of Wisconsin school record by more than 30 seconds. For the Wisconsin junior, the time was a personal best by a minute and 23 seconds.
“I was hoping for it and it is something I’ve been keying on for a very, very, long time,” the former St. Catharines athlete of the year said.
