The statistics tell you plenty about how countless miles of cross country and track training have paid off for Andres Arroyo.
The Colonial junior had one of the greatest underclass campaigns in Florida distance running history. He dominated the Class 4A cross country championship in November, leading the Grenadiers to the state team title, and then accomplished a grueling state track meet sweep in the 1,600-meter run, 3,200 and 4 x 800 relay.
Arroyo, the Sentinel's All-Central Florida boys track and field Athlete of the Year, is the first area runner since at least 1990 to record the state's fastest times for the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. That elite status might date much further back, but honor-roll leaders before 1990 are not easily accessible.
