Rhode Island has had a strong year in hammer throwing in 2012, with five boys over 210-feet so far. Heading into the state championship it looked like any one of those throwers could walk away with the title, but favorite Joe Velez (Classical, Providence, RI) ended up winning convincingly with a throw of 219'11". Charlie Ionata (Barrington, RI) and Kevin Conway (Westerly, RI) both broke 200-feet for second and third place respectively. The girls compatition also looked to be veryclose, with the first four seed within four feet of each other. But in this case, the top seed did not win. Maggie Dufault (Pilgrim, Warwick, RI) slightly egded top seed Ann Dagrin (Classical, Providence, RI) for the win. Catherina Malone (La Salle Academy, Providence, RI) took third place. Only two feet seperated first from third in what was an extremely close competition.
