Mary Cain was on her way to JFK late Wednesday afternoon for her cross-country trip of a young lifetime, a chance to run in the 800 meters at the Olympic Trials in Oregon.

“I think it’s still kind of sinking in a little bit,” the 16-year-old Bronxville sophomore said on her cell from the car.

An email had arrived overnight, according to her mom, Mary, confirming that Cain had indeed made the 32-runner field to race at Hayward Field in Eugene. Later in this eventful day, there was another significant announcement. Cain could take this satisfying news along for the ride: She’s the 2011-12 Gatorade New York Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
