Current athletes, alumni and UBC Track & Field supporters are encouraged to come out for an evening of fine dining at the Olive Garden Restaurant in Calgary on Thursday June 28th at 8:00pm.

The night will serve as an opportunity to recognize the success that UBC Track & Field athletes have achieved at the Olympic Games, as well as a reunion for alumni. The dinner will also mark the send-off for a group of former UBC athletes of who will be heading to London for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Race-walker Inaki Gomez has confirmed his attendance for the night. Gomez has already clinched the Olympic ‘A’ standard in the men’s 20km race walk – walking 1:21:05 this past March in China – and will have to finish top-three at the upcoming trials in Calgary to officially clinch his berth to London.

Former UBC standout javelin thrower, Liz Gleadle – who has also already hit the Olympic ‘A’ standard with her Canadian Record toss of 61.15m – will have to finish among the top-three in the women’s javelin competition.

UBC alumni high jumper Michael Mason is in the same boat as Gomez and Gleadle, having already clinched the Olympic ‘A’ standard earlier this season.

Curtis Moss will have to hit the Olympic ‘A’ standard in Calgary in order to secure his spot on the Canadian Olympic team. Moss, a former UBC javelin thrower, has already thrown over the Olympic ‘B’ standard of 79.50m twice.

The dinner will introduce alumni and supporters to a new generation of athletes, as three current members of the UBC Track & Field program will head to Barcelona, Spain, in mid-July for the IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships.

Maria Bernard will race the 1500m in Spain after a breakout run of 4:21.45 at the Harry Jerome Classic secured her spot on the Canadian Junior team. Canadian Junior Record holder and 2012 NAIA race-walk champion, Ben Thorne will wear the maple leaf in Spain and will look to continue UBC’s international race walking success. Devan Wiebe, a Vancouver-native and current T-Bird middle distance specialist, will take part in the women’s 800m. She has recently hit her stride with performances of 2:05 and 2:06.

The evening wouldn’t be complete without former UBC greats and Olympians in attendance. You can expect to see Thelma Wright (a 1972 Munich and 1976 Montreal Olympian), Doug Clement (a 1952 Helsinki and 1956 Melbourne Olympian) and Dianne Clement (a 1956 Melbourne Olympian). More people are also expected to confirm their attendance in the coming days.

UBC track supporters, families and friends are encouraged to come support the event. The Olive Garden is located at 333 36 Street Northeast, Calgary, AB.
