With his ragged beard and long ropes of curly hair, he looks more like an extra out of Taras Bulba than an Olympic champion high jumper. But he revealed a gentler side at his press conference when he said the first thing he did after winning was call his wife Polina, and say that he’d be home to Moscow soon, and the first thing he was going to do was hug his two year old daughter Melanie.
