Regardless of how well she performs, Klein High sophomore Hillary Montgomery never seems to be satisfied.
She finished fifth (11:22.5) out of 172 runners on at the two-mile UIL Region II Cross Country Meet in Arlington on Nov. 8.
“I
didn’t go with the pack of girls that I know I could have,” Montgomery
said. “I should have ran harder. I wasn’t about to pass out when I
crossed that line, and to me, that means, I didn’t push myself hard
enough.”
That kind of self-determination proved to work in
Montgomery’s favor. She medaled at the state meet last Saturday in
Round Rock, finishing 10th out of 103 runners in 11:21.78.
The top three teams and top 10 individuals earn state medals.
“She
does exactly what I ask of her and she’s a good example for the other
athletes, very-very dedicated,” Klein cross country coach Daniel Lawton
said. “As a coach, you’d rather have an athlete who encourages other
athletes. She’s talented, and she’s a very dedicated hard worker.”
