O'Connor High School senior Amanda Bishop runs 70 to 80 miles a week, but her feet encountered a new problem last spring: walking in high heels. Since becoming Miss Helotes, her life has become consumed by sashes and dashes. Last weekend, she finished second in the San Antonio Independent School District cross country meet on Saturday, then appeared at a pageant in Devine on Sunday. After spending hours on a float smiling and waving, she said running is "time to myself." Bishop, a self-proclaimed tomboy who always played sports, said she never imagined becoming Miss Helotes. The pageant has coaches, too; they teach walking patterns, interview techniques and putting on makeup.
