Galen Rupp - USA

In our very first Yes/No column, where we dissect the most relevant questions in the sport, we break down Galen Rupp's American 3,000m record attempt on Thursday at the XL-Galan meet in Stockholm, Sweden. So...

Will Galen Rupp break Bernard Lagat's 3,000m American record of 7:32.43?

YES

Two rabbits and a competitive field should push Rupp to break Lagat's 7:32.43 American record, set back in 2007. Rupp, who barely missed Lagat's American indoor mile record at the Terrier Classic earlier this season, when he ran 3:50.92, along with his 7:33.67 3,000m runner-up finish at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix earlier in the month, show he's in tremendous shape and ready to take another stab at Lagat's mark.

Further, the Portland-native should have revenge on his mind. This past weekend at the Millrose Games, Lagat took down Rupp's two-mile American record when he beat a stacked field with his 8:09.49. Lagat now owns every American indoor record from 1,500m to 5,000m and you can bet Rupp wants to get back at least one of those before his 2013 indoor season is over.

Rupp has shown in the right conditions he can challenge any of Lagat's indoor marks. His 3:50 mile performance shows he has the wheels to run with absolutely anyone in the world, while his 7:33 time proves with a little more training and fine tuning, not only can he break Lagat's mark, but he can possibly push the 7:30 barrier. Consistent, even races are Rupp's bread and butter and with two rabbits leading the way, Rupp has perhaps his best shot to take down the record.

NO

Rupp had his shot earlier in the month, when he came up a second short of Lagat's record. Rupp was primed for that race, coming off of his 3:50.92 performance. He was riding a wave of momentum, was mentally ready to challenge the mark and couldn't pull it off. Now, as he travels over to Europe, Rupp is the class of the field, meaning less competition, with all eyes on him. While the rabbits will most likely do their job to perfection, Rupp won't have an American crowd cheering him on and crossing numerous timezones is always a tricky move.

What do you think?

Most definitely...he was a little tired last time around. Lesson learned.

I think he'll do it. He's been running too well to doubt at this point.
