Coolsaet and Gillis Fifth and Sixth At Rock 'N' Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon

Published by

The road to Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon took Reid Coolsaet and Eric Gillis through Virginia Beach this weekend for the Rock 'N' Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon. The race boasted a very strong field headlined by American record holder Ryan Hall. Coolsaet and Gillis quickly established themselves in the chase pack as Kenyans Benson Barus and Solomon Busendich blistered from the gun. The chase pack would pass 5km in 14:50, 29:55 and 48:12 for 10 miles eventually whittling down to four including Hall, Gillis and Coolsaet along with Samuel Ndereba. Gillis would be the first of the four to crack and would finish sixth in an over two minute life time best of 63 minutes and 34 seconds. Coolsaet would try to hang on to Hall and Ndereba but would eventually finish fifth in 63 minutes and 16 seconds. With six weeks to go until the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon both athletes will continue to build and have several more high volume training weeks before beginning their respective tapers.
