Top Duck 110 meter hurdlers of the '00s

Until this last decade Oregon men earned three all-Americans in the high hurdles (110 meter and 120 yard) since 1962.  In the first decade of the 21st century the Ducks more than doubled their all-American (a-a) award receipts.  The best hurdler of this renaissance decade had to be Eric Mitchum.

Mitchum was a track athlete of untapped talent in high school.  His high school had two hurdles and no track so practice was along the sidewalk in front of the high school.  Even without a proper practice facility he finished second in the state meet in the 110 meter high hurdles (13.89) and 300 hurdles (37.17) during his senior year of 2002.

He came to Oregon and worked with Steve Silvey in his first year and was a runner-up in the Pac-10 meet.  He won the next three Pac-10 titles under assistant coach Dan Steele and earned two all-American awards in the 110 meter hurdles and three in the 60 meter hurdles indoors.  He made the semifinals of the 2004 Olympic Trials.

The year before Mitchum joined the Ducks Micah Harris set the school record over the 110 meter hurdle distance, 13.67, and earned an a-a for his seventh place finish at the NCAA meet.

One correction, Dan started coaching Mitchum in his Sophmore year, Steve Silvey coached him his Freshman year.  Great article.
