Ironton coach Greg Cronacher didn’t want any surprises.

Except for winning the meet, that is.

With solid performances across the board, Ironton won its own invitational track meet for the second straight year.

“You never know how things will turn out, but everybody stepped up and did what they were supposed to do today and the result was a win,” said Cronacher.

“We scored a 165 points, so that shows a little bit of quality and a little bit of depth. It was a good win because there were some good teams here today. Next week the outcome might be a lot different.”

Ironton had 165 points to finish first while Wheelersburg was the runner-up again with 157 points. Fairland was a strong third with 147 points followed by Chesapeake with 72.5 points. Rock Hill had 51.5, South Point 21 and Lincoln County, W.Va., 19.

The only thing that couldn’t be considered an unexpected surprise was Ryan Sias who won the high jump. It wasn’t that Sias can’t jump the 5-foot-8 winning height, he wasn’t scheduled to compete prior to the scratch meeting.

“We weren’t going to high jump Sias, but he begged me before the meet to high jump and I let him. If he doesn’t jump and win, we lose the meet,” said Cronacher.

Besides winning the high jump, Sias was second in the pole vault to teammate Jon Monnig who cleared 13-feet. Sias and Monnig joined Tyler Hager and Tres Wilks to win the 4x100-meter relay.

Wilks was second in the long jump and Sias was third. Chesapeake’s Peter Hintz went 19-8 to win the event.

Ironton had other winners including Ben Wells who hurled the discus 135 feet. Wells was second in the shot put.

Gary Monroe was part of two wins for Ironton as he breezed to first place in the 1600 at 4:53.6 and joined Pierce Reeves, Adam Stumbo and Dustin Moritz to win the 4x800 relay.

Fairland’s Matt Bloomfield and Joe Stewart racked up easy wins. Bloomfield won the 400 by more than two seconds and Stewart won by almost 20 seconds in the 3200.

Chad Gibson won the 800 run for the Dragons’ other first place finish.

The Chesapeake Lions Club meet will be at 5 p.m. Friday.
