So this whole track workout thing is starting to become a habit. After leaving Skan I drive up I90 to Lockport New York, just outside of Buffalo. I navigate my truck off to the side of the track and walk inside the gym to introduce myself to the team. After introductions and some trivia I ask coach Eberhardt what the workout is for the day. He informs me the team is doing 400's on the track and asks me to join in. I warm up a couple of miles with the mens varsity runners and we get to the track ready to workout. We step on the track and run our first 400. About 3 seconds too fast. From this result I conclude that I am being a distraction to the guys and decide it would be better for me to take pictures instead. At least thats what I said to get out of running the rest of the workout! No, I kid, but in actuality it was a great workout where the guys did 10x400 at just under race pace with short rest. They made it look pretty easy, and I got some great pictures and even poorly video tapped the last interval.
After the workout the guys went to cool down and I started talking to the kids about everything from NXN to how to help prevent side stitches in races. It was a great talk and several of the kids stayed after practice to keep chatting. I also had the opportunity to interview some of the guys who stayed around at the end about their goals for the team and the season. I think this is going to be a new thing I do at every visit and I will post the videos on the site after each visit. All in all it was a great trip.
Next stop: Shenendehowa New York, the top ranked Mens team in the state and one of the top contenders for the NXN Championship this year.
