Splits & Comments: Stan Lyons Invitational

Published by
Coach Harger   on Apr 25 2010, 11:56 PM

Results: Stan Lyons Invitational (4/24/2010)

JIMMY O’BRIEN – (800)

(#7 All-Time Personal 800 list)

SPLITS: 800 = 13.0, 12.9/25.9, 27.9/53.8, 13.9/1:07.7, 13.5/1:21.2, 28.1/1:48.3ht FAT = 1:49.73

NOTES: very good tactical race… closing the gap on lead runner from 500 to 600m in the future with higher level competition will be in order.  Good first 30m to stay out of trouble with position #1 draw on a box alley start configuration.

MASON CATHEY – (rabbit for both 800 & 1500)

(#2 all-time 800 PR and winner of 800)

SPLITS: 800r = 15.0, 15.8/30.8, 33.0/63.8, 32.3/1:36.1, 33.6/2:09.7ht FAT = 2:09.96

1500r = 17.3, 18.3/35.6, 18.5, 17.8/36.3/71.9, 17.7, 17.9/35.6/1:47.5, 18.0, 18.2/36.2/2:23.7

NOTES: excellent job pacing the 800 AND closing out with a win and #2 PR, good follow-up 1500 pacing effort and closing out for a very good red-line workout which will pay dividends in tough, high level races later this season.  Mission accomplished for this day.

NATE BROWNING – (400 & 800r)

SPLITS: 11.2, 11.3/22.5, 11.7/34.2, 13.6(47.8ht) FAT = 48.08

NOTES: under these less than “fast” conditions, you were more than likely a little too conservative from 100 through 300.  This was a predictable (and appropriate) adjustment from Sea Ray 2 weeks ago BUT NOW… let’s be prepared to stay aggressive the next two outings as your training is progressing well enough to force the issue and speed up the return to low 47’s as your next step back to national class 400 times which will come later this season.

RICARDO BELL – (400 & 800r)

SPLITS: 400 = 11.4, 11.6/23.0, 12.5/35.5, 13.8(49.3ht) FAT = 49.59

               800r = 12.7, 12.4/25.1, 27.7/52.8, 14.1, 13.6/27.7/1:20.5

NOTES: given current training, the first 200 was likely a little quick for a best performance at 400m BUT your recovery and rabbit outing with recovery factors certainly indicates that you have built the base needed to get after a return to PR 800’s this season.  We will continue to build in the speed in training sessions through May.

ADRIAN MYERS – (1500)

SPLITS: 13.8, 14.6/28.4, 15.1, 15.2/30.3/58.7, 15.1, 15.5/30.6/1:29.3, 15.6, 15.9/31.5/2:00.8 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

NOTES: We started the process of discussing and evaluating everything as your race results obviously do not match your training fitness.  It could be as simple as catching a training flat spot what with recent accommodations for your ankle/Achilles issue.  Tying this outing to your indoor outings would not be prudent as the birth of your first child and all normal stresses that went with it absolutely were in play then.  Champions stay tough minded and work to clear their minds when things are frustrating.  Let’s work to not let your pending breakthrough become a White Elephant and delay the process.  Believe in your RS slogan “fortune favors the brave”! Now is when this mindset comes into play.

JUAN CARRILLO – (1500r)

SPLITS: 13.4, 14.4/27.8, 15.3, 15.4/30.7/58.5, 14.8, 15.2/30.0/1:28.5, 15.2, 15.3/30.5/1:59.0, 15.4, 15.3/30.7/2:29.7

NOTES: This outing is a good reflection of your recovery from the little leg issue and should tell you that your base with a PR 1500 potential included is in very good shape going forward focused on PR’s at 800 & 1500 in early June.

STEVE LUDWIG – (1500r)

SPLITS: 13.6, 14.3/27.9, 15.3, 15.3/30.6/58.5, 15.0, 15.1/30.1/1:28.6, 15.2, 15.1/30.3/1:58.9, 15.1, 15.6/30.7/2:29.6, 14.8, 15.3/30.1/2:59.7

NOTES: Confirms what we felt we knew as of this date from training… your strength is good and your “800 base” is set from this entire training cycle’s higher volume base training.  Certainly a 1500 PR is in the mix while we work down the weekly training volume and long runs as we build in the true speed work that gave you your break through race times last year.

TEAM NOTES: Jesse Owens Classic is up next with Mason in Virginia for a Special Invitation Steeple.  Race entries for Jesse Owens must be finalized Monday evening at practice as they will be processed on Tuesday.
