 The day after Ryan Shay died during the United States Olympic trials for the marathon — a seemingly healthy 28-year-old stricken early in a race he had run many times — his family had no more answers.

An autopsy was performed yesterday, but Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the city’s medical examiner, said that results would not be final until perhaps the end of the week, after tests on Shay’s heart tissue samples were complete. Toxicology tests are also being run, and those results could take three weeks.
