Thetford has a new course, probably 40ish seconds faster than the old one. Although that course was pretty recent as well.

Eastman won at Thetford Academy today on a tough course in 18:31 with Shannon Murdock of Exeter NH second in 19:34 if that helps shed any light on where Eastman stands in comparison to other NE runners mentioned by DougB, although I'm not sure it does. I think the last time New England Championships were run at Thetford was in 2010 when Linds Crevoiserat, of Glastonbury CT won in 19:11. Erin Sullivan ran 17:25 at NE's at Thetford, making Eastman more on par with Tara Chaplin (9th at Footlocker and 18:30-range at Thetford), than Sullivan.

Berkson is in NC for the Great American Festival Saturday... I'm interested to see how that goes for her.

In NE I'd like: Debalsi, McNulty, Howlett, Eastman, Shehadeh*, Berkson, Gompers*, with Hotchkiss's Samantha Glass* an X-factor. Berkson has the
strongest track times but never has been serious about CC until now. Howlett,Eastman, Debalsi, Berkson will likely meet 11/9 in NH for the NE title.

Hi Chris. That's a legitimate point for sure and since very few runners have ever won two national titles -- assuming that's the measurement -- it's a tall order to measure up to. I weigh time much more heavily because each year there are different levels of competition, so a national champion one year could be 45 seconds slower than the previous due to a slower field. That said, I'm basing Eastman's prowess on her times on similar courses run by Sullivan and Chaplin, who placed top 10 one year at Footlocker. No doubt you are right that a national title would elevate her status big time. One thing I am confident about: Eastman worthiness as a member of the DyeStat top 30.

A few minor upsets and surprises on a very cool overcast day.

First Debalsi continues to demonstrate that she is the premier strength runner in the region and she isn't likely to be defeated unless someone can get away from her (mid-race) and make her change her pace. Which of course is much easier said than done. She has bigger challenges ahead and could be up to the any and all.

Howlett had a nice second place finish and the Stanford commit may have run a 5k that was equal or better than anything she's done on the track, which is a first.

Hannah Parker #9 one of the fastest track MD girls in the country put out a strong effort to lead Coe with their home state advantage to a strong team victory over LaSalle and Barrington.

Kirstin Sandreuter (Me) closed her season with a great run only to be pipped by Autumn Eastman for #3.

As for the guys Trev Hopper (UVa) had to delighted with his win over Alvarado whom he'd just lost the Cn title to and the same for LaSalle, whom had just been edged for the RI team title last weekend, propelled by Fr. standout David Principe in 9th (only ninth grader in top-60).

Eastman third, the two Rhode Island girls 6-7.

Coe-Brown NH wins it. Barrington edges La Salle even with Rego in the lineup.

Interesting stuff.

Eastman is an 800m runner and should be there at the end which should be interesting. Tolland has been good with their packing but it will be hard with the points that will probably be lost to the other teams #1. LaSalle, Barrington and Coe Brown really pack their 2-5 in close also. One interesting thing will be that only Coe Brown and CVU have run Derryfield this year and it was interesting that more top NE teams didn't attend Manchester Invitational for the experience of the racing the course.

I would doubt H.DeBalsi can be beat in an even paced race. The only person who is capable of a mid-race (or earlier) surge to get away would be Maddy Berkson (RI) and I doubt she'd be willing to do that just to shake things up. Eliza Rego(RI) probably would too, but not after what happened last weekend. She needs points.

So Debalsi will probably have a small lead--depending on race conditions-- from McMillan and Eastman (Vt) with Howlett (Cn), Rego, Saudreuter, and a still recovering Sheri Wilbur (RI) chasing them. 800m runners Berkson and Parker (NH)probably not a factor. I'd say DeBalsi, Rego, Eastman go 1,2,3.

After New Englands, the CT High School Coaches Association along with Wesleyan University will sponsor a track and field and cross country coaches clinic on November 23, 2013
at Wesleyan's Freeman Athletic Center, 161 Cross St. Middletown, CT from 8am-1:30pm.

The Keynote speaker is Latif Thomas, a highly successful Mass. HS Coach who is asked to speak at many clinics. He is owner of completetrackandfield.com, which is an outstanding resource for articles and videos to train high school athletes.

Is Eliza Rego out for the New England's... Two weeks ago. She beat McMillen by 17 seconds. Then at states she was a DNf, reportedly taking a fall. If she is OK, LaSalle should be the team favorite.
Another point, no mention in girls preview of Tolland, CT open champs. They run a tight pack in front of race. Staples is a long shot... Some good runners and it is does not hurt to score a 1 or 2 in this race.
DiBalsi has come a long way since last fall. Eager to see her face strong competition. All depends on course condition in the end.

SteveU we qualified for NXN in 2010 and 2011 as a team and Taylor Spillane qualified as an individual last year.

Nice feature, Doug! Great to see this great runner coming out of Champlain Valley. I think they may have made NXN Finals one year, or come really close.
