Philadelphia’s Avery Lewis’ Wins 55M and 200M With Fastest Times in 41 Years!
Top Point Scorers Head to Semi-Finals January, 31st in Brooklyn
Brooklyn, NY – Pratt Institute... Nine year-old sprinting sensation Avery Lewis of Friends’ Central in Wynewood PA, finished the Colgate Women’s Games’ final preliminary with two more record-breaking races. Officials confirm her times on Sunday January 18th in the 55 meters (7.75), and 200 meters (28.09), were the fastest performances in the Elementary A division in 41 years of competition. Lewis and Brooklyn’s Mid School High Jump Champion My'Khiyah Williams combined for five new records this season, including William’s 5’6 ½” best jump at the third preliminary meet.
In the High School division Brooklyn’s Alyssa Sandy of Paul Robeson High School finished undefeated in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.45, a week after clocking her season’s best (8.15) at the third prelim. Pennsylvania’s Gabrielle Wilkinson won the 800 meters in 2:21.1, and New Jersey’s Tia Livingston who placed 3rd in points in the hurdles also placed second in points in the shot put.
This season’s number of shot put participants swelled as publicity about outstanding performances helped spread the word of another path to success for athletes with a different skill set. Much of that publicity surrounds Egypt Parker of the Bronx, who remained undefeated after four preliminaries, enjoying her best toss (12.76) at the opening meet in December.
All six age/grade divisions, representing girls and women ages 7 through 70, featured newcomers sharing the spotlight with returning veteran champions, creating a widely diverse field of participants and an atmosphere conducive to friendly competition. Meet Director Cheryl Toussaint thanked all participants, and said this year’s competition broke a record for breaking records.
“Run, jump or throw - Our youngest sprinting stunner, a marvelous mid-school high jumper, and the number of high school shot put competitors, provided thrilling new records at four consecutive preliminary meets this season. We’re confident our semi-finals and finals will be just as exciting as the meets that determined who will compete.”
From an initial field of more than 10,000, some 430 top point scorers will compete in a semi-finals on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Pratt to determine who will face each other at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York City on Saturday, February 7, 2015, where trophies and educational grants-in-aid from Colgate-Palmolive Company are awarded to top place finishers in each age/grade division.
