The IAAF World Youth Championships took place over the last week in Donetsk, Ukraine. The competition is held every two years and is open to the best youth athletes in the world. This year's competition featured atheltes born in 1996 and 1997. The competition is held with the international implements for this age group: the 5-kilogram hammer for boys and 3-kilogram hammer for girls. Two American hammer throwers qualified for the meet by winning the USATF World Youth Trials competition last month: Colin Minor (South Brunswick, Southport, NC) and Nyla Woods (Henry W. Grady, Atlanta, GA).

Minor was the first to compete. During the three-throw qualification round on Thursday, Minor threw a personal best of 71.52 meters (234-feet 7-inches) to be among the thirteen athletes (among 39 entrants) the moved on to Friday's final. In the final Minor produced another solid throw of 70.97 meters (232-feet 10-inches) to place twenth overall. The competition was won by Croatia's Matija Greguric with a throw of 79.38 meters (260-feet 5-inches).

Woods competed in her own qualifying round on Friday morning and also produced a throw of 59.68 meters (195-feet 9-inches), which was less than four feet off of her personal best with the lighter implement. She finished in 21st position among 51 athletes, but unfortunately only the top 12 qualified for the final. Hungary's Réka Gyurátz won with a new championship record of 73.20 meters (240-feet 2-inches).
