Parsed vs. Raw Results

You may have wondered, as you browse RunnerSpace, what the difference is between this:

Raw Results

and this:

Parsed Results

The answer is: A LOT.  Open the 2012 Florida Relays results page in a new tab so you can follow along as we explain some of the key differences.  The link to that page is here.

The first and most obvious difference is that just about everything is hyperlinked in the second example and nothing is in the first.  Briefly, the first example is a completely raw version of the results that has been posted by the meet or timing company.  The second example is our parsed results, meaning we have put the raw results through our custom results parsing system to link up teams, bios, videos, and more, to existing pages, or to create new pages for athletes and teams we have never parsed before.

Note: we copy the results as they are posted by the timing company, which is why typos like our first place finisher, Levonte Whitfiled, is misspelled - it should be Whitfield, of course.  For our tutorial on fixing these typos, combining two bios if an athlete appears twice due to a misspelling, and other team or athlete bio issues, you'll want to read our tutorial on Claiming a Page or Event Basics here.  This pertains mostly to coaches.

There are seven different types of links in our parsed results.  Starting at the top, they are:

  • Event (the meet or race) page link.  Click here to go directly to our Florida Relays home page.
  • Timing Company link.  We credit the timing companies by creating pages for them.  Click here to go to their bio page which will list all the meets they have timed that we have parsed into our database.
  • Filter Results by Team dropdown menu.  If you want to view only one team's results, select the team from this menu.
  • Event (distance, jumps, throws, or XC distance) links.  Click on any link to quickly go straight to that event's results.  It will include both men and women.
  • Athlete bio - Each athlete in this meet now has a bio page created for them.  Click on any athlete's name to go to their bio page and view all the meets they have run, videos we have linked them in, news articles they appear in, and more.
  • Video links - hover over individual film icons to reveal the title of the video they are linked to, and click on that film icon to go directly to that video.
  • School or Team bio - Each team in our results now has a bio page created for them.  They are much like Athlete bios, except that they will include all athletes on that team who have been parsed into our database.

For example, hover your mouse over (don't click) second place finisher Kendal Williams' name in the results you've opened in your other tab.  You'll see a box pop up that acts as a brief summary of what you'll find on his page .  There are a number of things you can do right from this pop-up:

  • You can follow him (for our Following Content / Pages / Profiles / Events / Bios tutorial, click here).
  • You can click to go directly the different areas of his page, like his photos, videos, or news section.
  • You'll see recent activity on his page, like results of races he's run recently.
  • You can share his page with various social media sites, like Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus.

Now go ahead and click on his name.  This will take you to his bio page.  Feel free to peruse this bio page, but the holy grail lies below.  If you continue scrolling down, you'll see all the meets he has run and the results of his performance at those meets.  These meets include only the meets we have parsed into our system, and the biggest meets in each state will likely be parsed.  Continue scrolling down and you'll see the videos we have parsed to his bio as well.  These will include races, awards, and interviews he appears in.

Check out our Team bios in the same way to get familiar with how everything links together.  Do you think you or your team has a bio page on RunnerSpace?  If you're a high school or college runner, you probably do!  We have created over a million athlete and team bios at the time of this writing.  Search your name in our universal menu bar to see if your bio pops up!

If you're interested in claiming your bio, or you are a coach who is interested in claiming your team bio, click here to read our tutorial on Claiming a Page or Event Basics.  Here is an example of a well-done claimed team page.

We parse results and videos for meets literally every weekend of the year.  The raw results will appear first, and if they are a version that will work with our parsing system, be sure to check back again to see our parsed results and all the videos linked to your favorite athletes!
