Washington State's Jeshua Anderson quits football

Nebraska running back Collins Okafor also leaves team.

Washington State wide receiver Jeshua Anderson is quitting football to focus on track, another blow to the struggling Cougars (0-2).

The speedy junior and former standout at Woodland Hills Taft High announced his decision through a school spokesman Wednesday.

Anderson is a two-time NCAA champion in the 400-meter hurdles and
finished ninth at the U.S. Olympic trials last year. He caught 33
passes and had two touchdowns while starting 11 games in 2008 and had
four catches this season.

He says he wants "to focus all my attention on track. . . . I can't give 100% to both and still reach my goals."

Coach Paul Wulff says Anderson is a "once-in-a-lifetime
athlete" and that he respects his dedication to try to be the best in
the world in the hurdles.

Pre-Blog before PAC 10s

I have done my best to prepare for this meet; I have been
cooking myself steaks, pork chops, lasagna, really awesome hearty wholesome
meals, ones that will make me feel good. I have been relaxed and enjoying
myself. No problems in the last couple of weeks. I am really just super excited
about this meet. May 15th (day before) I really noticed how excited
I was about this meet. And all night I felt like it was Christmas Eve or like I
was going to Disney land the next day. I was so excited about the next day that
when I was woken up by the birds in the morning at 6am. It was hard for me to
really fall back asleep.

The Wednesday prior to the meet (Saturday) we had shot put
competition. It’s a light shot (4K 8.8lbs) just to be explosive. We do overhead
backwards throws, underhand forwards throws and overhead forwards throws with a
3K 6.6lbs med ball. I normally do pretty well in the first 2 but Alex really
always beats me in the last one. For weeks I would never get close to beating
him. I couldn’t understand how I could beat him in other things but not this last
one. Alex decided to go first and me second. I asked him if he was sure. And he
said he was. First throws were out and he was ahead by a good foot. I was
pissed. Then he throws further on his second throw….. So I match it, and I am
only a few inches behind him. He throws
again and throws another foot further. It was amazing I didn’t know if I could
beat him. So I throw again and match him. We are neck and neck, it was the best
competition I had had all year long and it was in practice. We kept throwing
further, and matching throws till the last throw, Alex didn’t throw further, he
left the stage open for me to take the win, if I could only throw a few inches
further. I got jacked up, let out a roar on my throw and got him by 7cm
(2inches).

Now you may ask y did I go off on that tangent when I should
be blogging about PAC 10s but to me this practice meant a lot to me, it meant
that no matter what happens, if someone is ahead of me all meet, and there is a
competition for first, that I have the drive and the power, to come out on top
in the end and to win it. That meant a lot to me. And I can't wait to see what
happens at PAC 10s

PAC 10s is over now. And I came out on top.

It was a little weird, I felt very relaxed, ready to go.
Ready to pop one. But there is also this thought in your mind that you haven’t
thrown in a long time, that 3 weeks is too much rest, that you have forgotten
how to really do it.

It was a hot day! 77 degrees and I was sweating. We received
news the day before that we would be throwing in the second of 2 flights that
day. This was somewhat of a problem. We get 30 minutes on the field and then
first flight goes, then only 15 minutes to warm up for the second flight. This just meant that we would have to warm up
with first flight, then wait around for 45 minutes (getting cold with each
minute) and then warm up again for 15 minutes before our flight. This is
something we are not used to. I don’t think anyone is used to, so it’s kind of
hard to judge how to properly warm up, but not get exhausted. We warmed up
well. I was feeling good and Alex and Britton said they were feeling good too. We
went inside to rest in the shade; we kept warm by throwing light med balls and
relaxing on some high jump pits as well. We got the call that it was the last round
of the throws and we came outside. The best throw was 208’7” so if we threw
further than that then you could make it to finals

First throws were underway I threw hard; I thought it was
good, but when I looked up it only landed slightly over the 70m line. I wanted
to scratch it super bad, it was a terrible throw. Corey white had already
thrown 248’ so I was just in second. I was super disappointed. But I made it to
finals already with that throw so I knew I had plenty of throws to make it
happen. Corey white threw again and skied one so high. It was crazy. Probably 200
feet in the air and he was pissed, he scratched it. Alex threw and knocked me
in 3rd place with a new PR of 235’5” I was happy that he PRed but I was
now sitting 3rd place. I have won every meet so far and I wasn’t about
to allow it to happen again. My second
throw I knew I had to really hit it. Again I thought I had a good throw but the
jav landed short of the 70m mark. It was just a few weeks ago that I was
landing javs just under the 80m mark. So I was really pissed. It just wasn’t my
day! There are days in the javelin (and all throws) that you may just not have
your day. I felt like I wasn’t going to do good all day. I also felt like the Olympic
trials were happening all over again. At the trials I had 6 weeks off and
because I was coming off of an injury my timing was way off and I did not throw
well. I felt the same way. 3 weeks off and my timing was all off. I wasn’t using
my hips into my throw.

I kept on seeing my coach Christina after every throw. And asking
her what I was doing wrong, they felt good and strong, I felt relaxed, and like
I wasn’t putting too much pressure on myself for this meet. But something wasn’t
going right. I was reminded of Wednesday when Alex and I were throwing shot puts
for competition and how we went throw for throw, and that it’s not over until
the last throw. But I also knew my reputation this year as my first throw always
being my biggest throw. I have not thrown all 6 throws since our second meet (Stanford)
so this was going to be a test of endurance for me. I didn’t want to be known
as “one and done Cyrus”, I wanted people to know that I am competitive and can
have big throws on anyone of my 6 throws. I wanted people to fear that I could
pop one at any time. But I was also worried that anyone today could pop into
first. Kyle Nielsen from Washington warmed up really well and I was worried he
would pass me and Alex up, and I knew Ryan Young has throw 250 and could throw
that at any time. It was really anyone’s game, if they wanted to take it.

My third throw was no better, so I scratched it; I was going
into finals in 3rd place. Which gave Alex and Corey White the upper
hand on me, always knowing what they need to throw to win it, and gave them
another chance to throw after me.

Finals round came up and I was trying to just relax, there
was something that I couldn’t control and it was my heart rate. It was
affecting how I threw. I needed to calm down and be confident that I could do
it. The difference between my meets after the Pepsi Invite (where I had my big
throw) was that I was confident that I could come to the meet and just win it. And
with that confidence I could come out and throw 78-80m every week. I opened up
finals and threw a miserable 218. I just kept reminding myself that big throws
can come on any throw of the competition, I remember at Oregon relays Britton
nelson threw his PR on his 3rd of 4th throw, and that we
need to keep our head in it, never give up and keep on throwing.

The 5th throw was a little better, I don’t know
what made it any better but it pushed me into 2nd place, basically Alex
and I had switched spots, from a team standpoint whether Alex got second and I got
3rd or vice versa means no difference point wise so I didn’t feel
really good about the throw. It didn’t change anything, but if I could take 1st place and Alex could have 3rd then that’s a 2 point swing. That’s what
I was looking for.

I ran over to my coach and I felt like both my big toes were
broken; I landed in the push up position after my throw and my feet landed hard
(toes first) onto the ground, I was hoping it wouldn’t affect my last throw. Christina
told me to go from my full approach. It’s something we kind of we have been
working on for the last 2 weeks (which is not a long time). It’s a long approach
that should be able to allow me to relax and not have to push it so hard in my
final steps to get to my max speed on the runway. It’s just 2 extra steps. But Christina
said that I am in second place, I have nothing to lose, and that we need to
practice it and get ready for regionals, nationals and USAs. It was going to be
an approach that is of professional level, very fast, hard to control, and
unpracticed could be very painful. I won’t lie I was not looking forward to it.
I didn’t think I could throw from the full approach yet. But I knew that it could
not change my current 2nd place status and if anything could only
get me into better position. I wasn’t positive where my competition mark
(compared to my practice mark) would be. The adrenaline you get in a
competition makes your mark much further than because of the added speed. But I
didn’t want to change my mark.

I knew I didn’t have much left in the tank, and normally
(since the Oregon preview didn’t go well) I don’t like the crowd to get me
going, the added adrenaline is too much for me. But I had nothing to lose, I needed
to get pumped. I asked the crowd to start clapping. And I was off. I threw and I
was thrown to the ground again. I got up and saw the jav stick just a little
big past the middle of 70 and 80m lines. Marked off at 76m. I was pretty sure
that took the lead, and then the reader board read it of in feet….. 250ft
5inches. 2 feet further than Corey White.

Originally I wanted to throw big the first throw, set the
tone, and put the pressure on everyone else, but today all the pressure was on
me. But after that throw I enjoyed the position I was in. I had thrown it at
the last second, it gave Corey white one chance to throw better than me (rather
than all 5). I just had to wait patiently to see what would happen. I watched
his throw go up, he had a lot of power in it but it was not thrown through the
point, which stalled it out and cost him a lot of distance, but it still landed
about middle of the 70-80m line, I was pretty sure I had the win, but waited
till they read it off. The called it out 74.09. I instantly praised God for the
win, for the ability he had given me to bring home the victory. I didn’t win
because of all the training I do, or the coaching staff or facilities at Oregon
but rather because God gave me the ability and resources to be good.

I will admit the meet was a little bitter sweet, the series I
had was terrible, and the final throw of 250 was not what I wanted. But the drama
and the win was amazing. I was quite happy, but overall I have bigger fish to
fry this year than just PAC 10s

Blog - Pac-10 Predictions - Men

http://www.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?event_id=20&do=blogs&blog_id=1341

Oregon has a very good shot of winning its third Pac-10 title in a row, fourth in the past five years and fifth in the last seven years.

100 - Marcus Duncan of Arizona State is the top returner and Ahmad Rashad of USC was the 2007 Pac-10 champion so this could be a great battle if Rashad is back to form. Senior Justin Woods of Washington State is a consistently high performer at this level and has plenty of experience at the NCAA level. This event is wide open

200 - This year senior Jordan Boase of Washington is doubling along with his specialty, the 400 meters. He will be challenged by double 2007 Pac-10 champion Ahmad Rashad of USC but is likely to get a double of his own.

400 - Senior Jordan Boase should get his first two individual titles after dealing with '07 World Championship competitor Lionel Larry of USC year. 2008 World junior and NCAA 400 hurdle champion Joshua Anderson of Washington State will attempt to defeat the Washington school record holder. Duck juniors Chad Barlow and Ashton Eaton will likely lead the rest of the competitors on their home turf.

800 - Olympian Andrew Wheating of Oregon will likely hold off top collegiate freshman Mason McHenry of Arizona State and NCAA veterans Cory Primm of UCLA and Nectaly Barbosa of Arizona State.

1500 - This could be an incredible race if the competitors push the pace. Five of the top nine NCAA outdoor marks are represented by the top seeds in this competition. 19 year old top seed Matthew Centrowitz jr will attempt to follow his NCAA leading win from the Payton Jordan Invite with a PAc-10 championship. Teammate and Olympian Andrew Wheating and NCAA veterans Garret Heath of Stanford, Michael Coe of Cal, Austin Abbott of Washington, and Brandon Bethke of Arizona State will challenge for what should be spectacular. 10,000 meter Olympian and Oregon indoor school record holder in the mile Galen Rupp is entered but he is likely to run the 5k and 10k.

Steeplechase - Oregon senior Chris Winter is a strong favorite to get his first Pac-10 championship after finishing behind ASU NCAA champions Aaron Aguayo and Kyle Alcorn. Last year he made his first NCAA championships and reached the final. Now is his chance to get a win. Stanford's Chris Mocko and John Sullivan are closest on the list.

5,000 - Senior Olympian Galen Rupp will attempt to repeat his 2007 double with tougher competition. Good thing his speed has improved and he has four NCAA titles already from this year. Transfer Brandon Bethke of Arizona State crushed the old school record by 10 seconds and freshman Chris Derrick of Stanford broke Rupp's American junior record. All three runners are at least expected to double. Depending on how tired Rupp and his competitors are this could be a great race.

10,000 - To end the first night Oregon will attempt to accrue a large number of points in this race. This mass of points have led to two consecutive Pac-10 team championships. Five of the top six seeds are Ducks and led by Rupp. To derail the Ducks chances teams will have to try to break this up but Rupp, senior Shadrack Biwott, and Luke Puskedra are the only NCAA automatic qualifiers, so it will be difficult.

100 hurdles - Stanford senior and 2008 NCAA semifinalist Myles Bradley is almost a lock but anything can happen when barriers are in front of you. Sophomore Oscar Spurlock of USC has made a big step up this year but will have to take another one to beat Bradley.

400 hurdles - Sophomore world junior and NCAA champ Jeshua Anderson of Washington State is back and everyone will be fighting for second. Teammate Barry Leavitt and Cal's Jake Hanson have NCAA experience and will face super-frosh Amaechi Morton of Stanford and finally healthy sophomore super-prep David Klech of Oregon in the fight for second.

4x100 relay - USC has a number of very good runners, UCLA has some good runners and ASU is trying to pass well enough to win here. We will see after the stick makes it around the track.

4x400 relay - Every year teams come into the conference meet and obliterate their season bests. USC and Arizona State always have great runners. ASU and USC have won the last ten Pac-10 championships and ASU won last year. It is likely not to change.

HJ - Ed Wright of Cal had won two in-a-row but now that he has graduated he will likely be succeeded by the emergence of Trent Arrivey of Washington State who is the collegiate leader. Manjula Wijesekara of USC and Taylor Hobson of UCLA are a step ahead of the rest of the competition for second.

Pole Vault - Sophomore Scott Roth redshirted last year and recovered his freshman form by almost (short .02m) equaling his 2007 pr that he set indoors. In the difficult wind conditions of Hayward Field there is never a solid favorite and he will be joined by fellow Huskies Ryan Vu and Jared O'Conner. Nick Mossberg of Arizona and any one of the five quality UCLA vaulters could also win this.

Long Jump - Two NCAA scoring seniors left and it has left a void at the top of the conference. Junior Ashton Eaton jumped into it during the dual with UCLA and beat Taylor Hobson's personal best in the process. Senior Luis Rivera-Morales of Arizona was third at this meet last year behind those two aforementioned seniors and consistently jumps well so this should be a great competition.

Triple Jump - If Rivera-Morales doesn't get his first PAc-10 title in Saturday's long jump he will likely get it here and possibly get a school record in the process but he will be strongly challenged by the rapidly developing senior Aven Wright of USC and NCAA competitor Jonathan Clark of UCLA.

Shot Put - Junior Ryan Whiting and Senior Zach Lloyd are former high school leaders and have prs over 69 feet. Lloyd won the Pac-10 last year but Whiting finished 2nd ahead of Lloyd's fourth at the NCAA championships. Indoors Whiting won his second straight title and Whiting was third. They are two of the top talents at the meet and may be future Olympians.

Discus Throw - Before the season five of the top nine returning collegians were from the Pac-10. Due to injuries that has been reduced to four of the top seven throwers this year but it should still be great competition. Daniel Shaerer of Stanford (199-3) leads the group and is second nationally, just 3/4 of an inch further than Whiting and nine inches ahead of Cal senior Martin Maric. Junior Jason Lewis of Arizona State has joined this elite group this year and is less than 7 feet behind. It should be a tough competition.

Hammer Throw - Junior Jason Lewis of Arizona State has improved 27 feet this year (223-7) and is now one of the top collegiate hammer throwers. He will have to beat 2008 NCAA fourth place finisher Boldizsar Kocsor of UCLA. Junior Zack Midles has improved significantly this year and will have to some more to contend for a title.

Javelin Throw - Former world leader but still collegiate and US leader Cyrus Hostetler of Oregon (272-10) will have a tough competition with NCAA runner-up and defending champ Corey White of USC who has also pr'd this year (272-2)

There will be many interesting battles among top level competition including the 400, 1500, 5,000, 10,000, pole vault, shot put, hammer throw and javelin throw. Competitors in each of these events are among just a few NCAA favorites.

Predictions - Oregon 153, USC 104, ASU 103, Stanford 100

Blog - Pac-10 predictions - women

http://www.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?event_id=20&do=blogs&blog_id=1340

100 and 200 - ASU and USC will dominate the sprints with '08 NCAA comp and double pac-10 champ Charonda Williams going against last year's 2nd place finisher in the 100 and 200, Cherelle Garrett of Cal and the typically strong USC sprint squad with freshman sensation Aareon Payne of USC. Amber Purvis of ORegon will challenge in the 100 meters.

400 - Nicole Leach of UCLA will move from the 400 hurdles for this meet to go against defending champion Keshia Baker of Oregon. Olear of USC, Lacy of UCLA and Benjamin of ASU have NCAA relay experience and are close challengers.

800 - Zoe Buckman of Oregon was fourth at last year's NCAA meet but has not shown the form yet that she exhibited last year although she does lead the conference this year. Anna Layman of Washington State was eighth in that race last year but also has not shown the form. Curry of UCLA and Pierce of Cal are consistent challengers and may get their shot to win the title this year.

1500 - Lauren Centrowitz of Stanford has looked very good this year and after two year's of being runner-up has her best shot to win in her senior year. Defending champ Follett of Washington and teammate Campbell will challenge along with Ducks Blood and Kosinski

Steeple - Freshman Husky sensation Marie Lawrence will try to get her first conference title against '08 NCAA 9th place finisher and USC sophomore Zsofia Erdelyi, Stanford's Emilie Amaro and two-time defending champ Sara Trane of WSU

5,000 - Nicole Blood of Oregon will try to defend her title against freshman sensation Laurynne Chatelat of Stanford as both times are so close and done in different races that who knows who can go how much faster. Three Huskies Follett, Campbell and Lawrence are close behind with senior transfer Scherf of the Ducks in there but with an up-and-down season. Of major note is the fact that Chetelat is the only one not expected to double

10,000 - Junior MAttie Bridgmon of Oregon has had an incredible season and has had prs throughout the season, indoors and outdoors. She has shown a great amount of fight and competitiveness and maybe will get credit for the first time with a Pac-10 title. She faces tough, veteran competitors in Anita Campbell of Washington and Ali Kielty of ASU. She also faces 2008 NCAA third place finisher Alex Gits of Stanford who just ran her first race since last year by running a 5k at the PAyton Jordan Invite so she is a dangerous wild card.

100 hur - Kimyon Broom of Cal is the defending champion and top seed but did not make the NCAA meet last year but USC teammates Shalina Clarke (8th) and Nia Ali (semis) did. This shoud be fun to watch as fortunes always change rapidly during a 100 meter hurdles race.

400 hurdles - 2007 NCAA champ and '08 runner-up Nicole Leach of UCLA must have thought she needed more competition in the 400 after only one Pac-10 competitor even made it into the NCAA heats last year. Freshman sensation Dalilah Muhammad of USC should make a run at the NCAA meet and is far ahead of the competition.

HJ - Defending NCAA and Pac-10 champion Elizabeth Patterson of Arizona had had a 3 1/2" pr and should dominate here. NCAA veterans and teammate Jasmin Day and California's Inika McPherson will head the rest unless talented Rhonda Watkins of UCLA overcomes her regular injuries.

PV - No one of this highly successful group has dominated or regularly succeeded. This is the most unpredictable of any of the events anyway and more so with the changing and sometimes heavy winds of Hayward Field who knows. Katie Morgan of Cal won the NCAA champ with the lowest height since 2002, Gabriela Duclos of Arizona was the 2007 Pac-10 champ, and they along with Melissa Gergel of Oregon, Katy Viuf, Tori Pena and Tori Anthony of UCLA have been NCAA all-Americans or competitors. Gergel does have more experience with these conditions and that will help.

LJ - 2x 2007 NCAA champ Rhonda Watkins of UCLA is hoping to get back to that form. Anything close and she is a cinch to win this meet. Stanford's Arantxa King and Oregon's Jameesha Youngblood should lead the rest.

TJ - Arantxa King of Stanford will take of the mantle given to her by former teammate and four-time PAc-10 champion Erica McClain. She is joined by teammates Jordan Merback and Whitney Liehr who will challenge her as will Cal's Artensia Young and former high school sensation Ke'Nyia Richardson of UCLA.

SP and Discus - Sarah Stevens of ASU has been one of the top collegian and American shot putters since her freshman year and will attempt to win her third title. She will be a heavy favoritein both throws

Hammer Throw - Defending NCAA champion senior Eva Orban has not finished lower than third at the NCAA meet but will be looking for just her second NCAA title. Sarah Stevens of Arizona State upset her last year and will attempt to again in a tough women's team overall race.

Javelin Throw - Senior Rachel Yurkovich will try to be the second javelin thrower to win four consecutive Pac-10 titles (joining Inga Stasiulionyte of USC '01-'04) but more interestingly will try to be one of four in any event joining legendary athletes Amy Acuff of UCLA in the high jump ('94-'97) and Sheena Johnson of UCLA in the 400 hurdles ('01-'04). Young star sophomore Marissa Tschida and freshman Courtney Kirkwood of Washington State will try to derail Yurkovich's plans.

Oregon 137, USC 126, ASU 115, Stanford 114

News - Multi-Talented! Ducks Sweep Pac-10 Combined Events - GoDucks.com

http://www.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?event_id=20&do=news&news_id=5709

05/10/2009 - GoDucks.com

EUGENE, Ore. -- Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen led a 1-2 Oregon
sweep of the Pacific-10 Championships combined events Sunday at
Historic Hayward Field. It was the first time in history that one
school had claimed the top two spots in both the league’s men’s and
women’s combined competitions.

Oregon went 1-2-8 in both the heptathlon and the decathlon to tally
19 points in each competition and bank a solid lead for next weekend’s
Pac-10 Championships, which will be contested at Hayward Field.

"Today was great; we had PR’s all over the place," said associate
director of track and field Dan Steele. "I’m so proud of all of our men
and women out there, they really came to compete today and there’s
nothing more I could ask of them.

"We take 19 points on both the men’s and women’s side into next week and that helps out tremendously."

Eaton easily defended his Pac-10 decathlon title by scoring 8,091
points -- the fourth straight decathlon that the junior from Bend,
Ore., has gone over 8,000 points.

He opened the day with a personal best in the 110 meter hurdles,
winning in 14.01 seconds. That was the eighth-fastest 110 hurdle time
in school history and also an NCAA Regional qualifier.

Eaton then took second in the discus with a throw of 130 feet, 7
inches that was just four inches off his personal best. In the pole
vault, Eaton was third with a clearance of 15-11. He cruised to the
finish with a 163-0 throw in the javelin and a fourth-place showing in
the 1,500 meters in 4:36.87.

"Back to back Pac-10 titles is nice but I’m happier about getting
those points for my team," said the defending NCAA decathlon and indoor
heptathlon champion. "I’m so overly proud of my teammates and I can’t
wait to see what next weekend brings."

While Eaton was becoming the first Duck to win back-to-back Pac-10
titles since Pedro daSilva in 1990-91, Oregon’s Marshall Ackley fought
to the finish to hold off Washington’s Jeremy Taiwo for second place.

The junior from Nyssa, Ore., opened the day with a decathlon-best
14.95 in the 110 meter hurdles that was good for third place. That set
him off on a string of personal bests, throwing 124-11 in the discus
(fifth), clearing 15-3 in the pole vault (tied for fourth), throwing
176-0 in the javelin (fourth, with a 7-7 PR) and finishing second in
the 1,500 meters (4:25.64).

All of which added up to 7,337 points and a 404-point PR.

"Being in the level of competition that we had today really helps
raise my game and in turn makes me a better competitor," said Ackley,
who now ranks 14th in the nation in the event. "I can’t wait to see
what we can do coming into the next week."

After the two Ducks, Taiwo was third with 7,299 points, followed by
California’s Kyle Mills-Bunje (7,007), Stanford’s Corey Dysick (6,864)
and Chris McGovern of Arizona (6,829).

Oregon’s Aaron McVein was eighth with a personal-best 6,664 points.
The junior from Eugene, Ore., had PRs in the 110 hurdles (17.42),
discus (127-7) and javelin (161-1).

In the men’s team race, Oregon led with 19 points, followed by
Washington with six, California with five, Stanford with four, Arizona
with three and UCLA with two.

On the women’s side, Oregon scored 19 points, getting 10 from
Theisen, eight from Kalindra McFadden’s second-place finish and one
from Erin Funkhouser’s eighth-place mark. USC was second with 10
points, UCLA was third with five, followed by Stanford’s three and
Arizona’s two.

"This is huge; exactly what we wanted to do," said McFadden. "I knew I had to have a good day."

Theisen became just the second Pac-10 champion from Oregon, joining Kelly Blair who won in 1993 and 1994.

The sophomore won by scoring a personal-best 5,986 points, which
leads the NCAA in 2009 and kept her at second on the UO all-time list.
McFadden was next with personal-best 5,780 points -- third on the UO
career list and third in the nation this season -- followed by Nia Ali
of UCLA (5,681) and Ryann Krais of UCLA (5,606) who all met the NCAA
automatic qualifying standard. Funkhouser was eighth with a
personal-best 4,881 points. Theisen’s score was the sixth-best in
Pac-10 history, while McFadden had the 10th-best score in league annals.

Theisen maintained her first-day lead throughout, finishing third in
both the long jump, with a leap of 19-4.75, and the javelin throw
(133-8). She then brought the championship home by taking second in the
800 meters in a lifetime-best 2:14.57.

"I’m really more excited we went one, two and eight in the
heptathlon than I am about winning it," said Theisen, who recorded a
221-point PR. "Going into the 800, I was nervous at the start but in
the end I felt good, and I feel awesome right now.

"The plan was to do well and get the team pumped up and score early
points for the team," said the Humboldt, Sask., native. "It was awesome
having teammates that support you. We feed of each other’s energy and
we help each other stay relaxed."

McFadden, who began the day in third place, had a leap of 18-9 in
the long jump, before putting on a charge in the final two events to
catch Ali.

The senior from Bozeman, Mont., took second in the javelin with a
personal-best throw of 134-3, and then passed Ali on the final event by
running a personal-best 2:13.82 to win the 800 meters and record a
198-point PR.

"I surprised myself with a PR in to 200," said McFadden. "I knew I
had to run my heart out. That’s probably the best kick I’ve ever had.
People have seen me freak out like eight times this year, but it’s
exciting. I want to continue doing this."

Funkhouser came from nearly 200 points back with an impressive
performance in the 800 meters. She nipped Liz Fuller of Washington by
37 points to grab a team point for the Ducks.

The junior from Grass Valley, Ore., had a personal bests in the long
jump (18-0.25) and 800 meters, where she placed fourth in 2:15.43 for a
23-point PR.

Blog - Pac-10 cross country meet

http://www.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?event_id=20&do=blogs&blog_id=942

The Pac-10 has proven to be the top conference in cross country. On both the men's and women's sides the top two teams in the country were at the Pac-10 cross country meet. The Washington team had a large contingent of fans. It seemed larger than they ever get for a home track meet or when Washington visits Oregon for the Pepsi Team Invitational.

Freshman Kendra Schaaf of Washington proved to be the top female collegiate cross country runner outside of two time defending champ Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech. She ran away from the competition and broke the course record by 30 seconds. At pre-Nationals, where she finished third, it seems clearly that she was doing pack running with her teammates that finished fourth and fifth, freshman Christine Babcock and Sophomore Marie Lawrence. She has a pop to her stride and cadence that makes her look similar to international championship competitors. She has a tremendous future if she stays healthy. Top Ducks Nicole Blood and Alex Kosinski had to let Schaaf go as she passed one mile in an incredible 5:07.

The Washington runners moved up and dropped Zoe Buckman. The pace seemed too hard for the top Ducks and it seems they were shocked by Schaaf's ability. Both Ducks severely dropped off the pace and Graduate senior Lindsey Scherf passed Blood and Kosinski to finish behind the top six performance by the first six Husky runners. Blood and Kosinski were at a loss after the meet. The top five Huskies averaged a faster time than the previous meet record. For the first time ever in Pac-10 history a team took the top five spots at the championship meet. Washington scored 15 points to 55 for Oregon. Trackshark made this historic performance the top story of the weekend.

The Oregon men had not competed much this year. Earlier in the year they had defeated fourth ranked Portland and fifth ranked Alabama. Now they would face second ranked Stanford. Redshirt Senior Galen Rupp took off early and ran impressively. Samuel Chelanga of Liberty had been the prohibitive favorite for the NCAA championship but Rupp was impressive enough to excite track experts into thinking Galen may win his first NCAA championship. Duck Freshman Luke Puskedra and Senior Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott tried to stay close but eventually fell off Rupp's high pace. Graduate senior Curtis Suver, Sophomore Andrew Wheating and Sophomore Matt Centrowitz stayed in a pack of close to ten runners for half of a race.

At halfway Kiptoo-Biwott and Puskedra were 16 seconds behind Rupp and the Ducks in the pack were in 4-6 for a Duck sweep (50 seconds behind the pair) similar to the Husky women. At that point the top Stanford runners, freshman Chris Derrick and senior Garret Heath, pushed the pace and broke up the pack a bit. Rupp continued to push the pace and Puskedra stayed ahead of Kiptoo-Biwott. Shadrack seemed to be hurting and Derrick and NCAA miler Heath moved past him. Olympian Wheating led the packed Ducks with a ninth place finish while Centrowitz was 11th and Suver 12th. Oregon scored 28 points to Stanford's 47. Washington and Cal tied for third with 104.

Notes: Diego Mercado did not run because he had an off week of training but he is ready to run well at regionals. Junior Kenny Klotz threw off his redshirt but had an off meet and will hopefully be ready for regionals. Danny Mercado fought well and steadily moved up to
